CHICAGO, Ill. - The Illinois Tech baseball team hosted the University of Chicago on Friday afternoon at Ed Glancy Field in the first of four straight games against the south side opponent. One big inning cost the Scarlet Hawks, as an 11-run sixth propelled the Maroons to a 16-5 seven-inning win.

How it Happened

  • Chicago jumped ahead early, scoring three times over the game's first two innings.
  • Illinois Tech, however, stormed back in the bottom of the second. The Scarlet Hawks singeld four times in the inning and three times with two outs. A base knock from center fielder Matt Witkowski plated two runs to pull the Hawks to one (3-2).
  • After Neal Shah entered the game to pitch a scoreless third, the Scarlet Hawks left runners on second and third base to end the bottom of the inning. Chicago responded with a two-run fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead, with both runs scoring on groundouts.
  • Shah pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning before the Maroons had the big sixth inning. Tech used three different pitchers in the frame, at one point walking five batters in a row. The Maroons recorded five hits in the inning, one of which was a three-run homer off the bat of first baseman Thomas Prescott.
  • Tech could not find any more offense until starter Brenton Villasenor (six innings, two earned runs) left the game for Chicago. The Scarlet Hawks plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a Ted Howell RBI single and a two-RBI single from John Zalewski

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Both Witkowski (1-for-3) and Zalewski (1-for-2) had a season-high two RBI.
  • Howell, the first baseman, was a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with a double, RBI, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a walk.
  • Shortstop Tyler Tucker stole two bases.
