Big 2nd Half Propels Women's Soccer To Win At Aurora

Aurora, Ill. - After seeing their ten-game unbeaten streak come to an end in a tough non-conference loss at the University of Chicago on Monday, the Illinois Tech women's soccer team was looking to rebound Wednesday evening when they traveled to Aurora for a conference matchup with the Spartans. The Scarlet Hawks were able wash the taste of defeat away, using a four-goal second half to take down the Spartans 5-0. With the win, the Hawks improved to 9-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, and boosted their overall record to 12-2-1. The Spartans fell to 4-2-2 in NACC play, and 5-4-3 overall.

Allison Murray and Amelia Moseman each had two goals and an assist, Jayla Anaya and Kaitlyn Walsh had a pair of assists, as the Scarlet Hawks outshot the Spartans 22-3 for the match.

"The team showed a lot of resilience" said Head Coach Roshane Ellison. "Great bounce-back win after Monday's result."

How It Happened
  • Murray opened the scoring in the 11th minute for Illinois Tech. Anaya and Walsh had a give-and-go along the left side. Walsh's through ball to Anaya set the winger free to the left of goal. As Anaya got closer to the goal box both interior defenders collapsed on her, allowing Anaya to pass to a wide-open Murray in front of the net, who one-timed it for an early 1-0 Scarlet Hawks lead.
  • The Scarlet Hawks extended their lead in the 58th minute. With two defenders draping Anaya on the left side inside the Spartans' zone, Anaya spun to the outside and headed towards the left corner. With a hobbled Aurora defender, the Spartans lost contain in front of the net. Anaya spotted Moseman sitting in a soft spot at the top of the goal area, and threaded a pass to the forward who fired a left-footer for a 2-0 Illinois Tech lead.
  • Less than two minutes later, the Scarlet Hawks would strike again. A throw-in from the left side found Caitie Chismarich 30-yards out from goal. As she cut to the inside she centered a pass to Moseman, who one-timed a chip pass to Murray in front of her. With the goalkeeper coming out to contest her and a defender to her right, Murray cut to her left and slid the ball into the center of the net for a 3-0 Illinois Tech lead.
  • Once again, the Scarlet Hawks tacked on less than two minutes later. A free kick by Aurora into the Scarlet Hawks zone was headed back into Spartans' territory by Murray. Murray followed up her header an recovered the ball ten yards into the Spartans zone, sending a pass to Walsh ten yards in front of her in the middle of the field. Walsh sent a pass between two defender to a cutting Moseman on her right. Dribbling the ball down to the right corner of the goal box, Moseman fired a right-footer into the top-right corner, extending the Hawks lead to 4-0.
  • A handball by Aurora after an Illinois Tech corner kick led to a Scarlet Hawks penalty kick. Gabriella Baltes placed the ball high-left for the final goal of the match, and a 5-0 Illinois Tech advantage.
