Whitewater, Wis. - The Illinois Tech swimming and diving team opened their season and a new era for the team while competing at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday afternoon.
Although the Scarlet Hawks came up short for the team scores, the bigger picture was the team was able to compete in their first meet under new Head Coach
Kate Chronic.
The Scarlet Hawks were piloted by interim Head Coach
Billy Bafia the last two years, and the team was able to achieve good levels of success, including back-to-back swimmers who qualified for nationals. Chronic takes over a team with several returners as well as an infusion of first-year swimmers to the roster.
Women's Results
The women's team lost 137-78 to the Warhawks. Top finishers for the women's squad were:
Anna Malik, placing first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:13.62;
Emma Dutkiewicz finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:15.36 and second in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:02.42;
Claire van Biljon taking first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.55;
Nethmi Bopearatchy taking second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:31.09 and second in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:06.57;
Taryn Oser winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.24;Â
Olivia Kocot took second in the 1-meter diving competition with a final score of 95.20.
Men's Results
The men's team lost 153-89. Top finishers for the men's team were: Mark Klinchin winning the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:59.57 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.52; David Halmy taking second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:51.97 and second in the 100-yard butterfly at 55.51; Don Rose claiming second in the 50-yard freestyle at 22.05; Bjarne van Oord taking first in the 200-yard IM at 1:59.07 and first in the 100-yard backstroke at 51.86; Evan Standish taking second in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 170.60.

The Scarlet Hawks will travel a few blocks south next Saturday at 1:00 PM, as they head to the University of Chicago to compete in the Chicago Quadrangular against Wheaton College, Olivet Nazarene, and the host University of Chicago Maroons.
