Milwaukee, Wis. - With a chance to move their conference record even heading into the final week of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, the Illinois Tech women's tennis team fell to the host Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders in a close match, 5-4.
With the loss, the Scarlet Hawks fell to 3-5 in conference play with one regular season match remaining. They currently sit in the sixth and final spot to qualify for the NACC post-season tournament in the spring. The Hawks overall record dropped to 3-7. The Raiders improved to 5-2 in conference play and 6-6 overall.
Doubles Play (MSOE 2 - Illinois Tech 1)
The Scarlet Hawks opened doubles play by taking the number one doubles match, as
Sofia Zaballa Martinez and
Hannah Markiewicz defeated MSOE's Karley Way and Stephania Gonzales 8-6. MSOE responded by winning the number two and three doubles matches, with
Maria Moran Miranda and
Paige Geiger falling in the number two match 8-2, and
Ashley Dame and
Rhea Karumuru losing 8-4 in the number three match.
Singles Play (MSOE 3 - Illinois Tech 3)
The Scarlet Hawks were able to split with the Raiders in singles competition 3-3, but the three singles wins for MSOE allowed them to win the overall match 5-4. Markiewicz took the number one singles match 6-7(5-7), 6-1, 6-2. Zaballa Martinez followed that up with a victory in the number two singles match, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Dame rounded out the singles victories for the Scarlet Hawks, taking her number four match 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Geiger fell in her number three singles match 2-6, 0-6, Moran Miranda lost her number five singles match in a three set battle, 6-1, 1-6, 3-6, and
Smrithi Shreedhar lost the number six singles match 0-6, 2-6.
