Chicago, Ill. - For their 2023 Dig Pink game, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's volleyball team welcomed the Lakeland University Muskies to the Keating Sports Center for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) match-up. The Hawks (3-15, 2-5) fought to put up a tough fight in set two, and then took set three to push the Muskies (8-10, 3-3) to four sets. Ultimately, the Muskies took control offensively in set four to win the match 3-1.
How It Happened
Set One - Muskies 25, Hawks 18

After a brief tie at 2-2, the Muskies would take the lead and hold it the rest of the way through set one. The Hawks would push to stay close, trailing by one point multiple times, before the Muskies went on a 10-3 run to take a 15-6 lead. The Hawks were able to answer with a 8-2 run to come within three as the score read 17-14 in favor of the Muskies. Briar Moore recorded two service aces during this time while Maria Alcantara, Moore, London Francis, and Anna Elena Sofia Sebastio all recorded a kill. By the end of the set, the Muskies would take the victory 25-18.
Set Two - Muskies 25, Hawks 23

During set two, the Hawk and Muskies both took turns being ahead. After a 4-4 tie, the Muskies took a short 8-5 lead before the Hawks went on a 7-0 run to tie the set and ultimately take the lead. During this run, Moore would record one kill and three service aces. Francis also would record one kill. The Muskies then went on a short run of their own, tying the set and taking the lead at 14-13. Although the Hawks fought till the very end of the set, they would come up just short after going on a 6-0 run to drop set two to the Muskies 25-23.
Set Three - Hawks 25, Muskies 22

Continuing to build on their momentum from a close set two, the Hawks fought hard to pull away with set three. The Hawks and Muskies would remain pretty close through a tie at 10-10 before the Hawks jumped ahead 13-10. The lead wouldn't last long as the Muskies quickly tied the set up before taking quick lead. Both sides would briefly go back-and-forth being tied and holding the lead before the Hawks went on a 4-0 run to come out ahead. Moore and Karla Trautmann Mendez would both record a kill during this run. The Hawks were able to keep enough momentum going in their favor to take set four 25-22 with a kill by Francis.
Set Four - Muskies 25, Hawks 13

For the fourth and final set of the match, the Muskies would quickly jump out ahead and not look back. Turning the game in their favor, the Muskies quickly went up 8-1 on the Hawks. The Hawks fought to stay within reach, trailing by three points at 13-10, but the Muskies proved to be too much. The Muskies closed out the set with a 6-0 run to secure a 25-13 set four victory, as well as the match victory.
