Women’s Basketball Unable to Hold onto Lead, Fall Short to Mount Mary

Milwaukee, Wis. - On the road in Wisconsin, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's basketball team took on the Blue Angels of Mount Mary University. Although the Hawks (0-4) led much of the non-conference contest, the Blue Angels (4-1) would pull away during the final minutes of action to take the 70-67 victory over the Hawks.

First Half (Mount Mary 35 - Illinois Tech 44)

  • The Blue Angels came out quick, going up 6-0 on the Hawks by the 8:42 mark. The Hawks first basket came from Julia Bucci who made a three at 7:54. At 6:46 the Hawks held their first lead of the game with a jump shot by Kaya Jones making the score 7-6. After the Blue Angels briefly took back the lead with a layup, the Hawks closed out the remaining 5 minutes and 43 seconds of play with a 16-5 run. During this run, Allie Sillo, Bucci, Camden Joko, and Berit Rusing all made a three pointer, with Sillo making two. At the end of the first quarter, the Hawks led the Blue Angels 23-13.

  • Keeping momentum on their side, the Hawks quickly added 7 points to their score to take a 30-13 lead at the 8:34 mark with a three pointer by Bucci and two layups by Chloe Churilla. The Hawks continued to control the ball through much of the second quarter. At the 2:54 mark, the Hawks held a 19 point, 44-25 lead over the Blue Angels after a Jones 3-pointer. To end the quarter, the Blue Angels went on a 10-0 run. At halftime, the Hawks led the Blue Angels 44-35.  

Second Half (Mount Mary 35 - Illinois Tech 23)

  • Coming out of the locker rooms, the Hawks began the third quarter with a Jones jump shot. Throughout the quarter, the Blue Angels began to slowly chip away at the Hawks lead. The Hawks fought to stay ahead, going on a 7-1 run between 4:10 and 2:19 to have a 10-point, 56-46 lead. At the end of the quarter, the Hawks led the Blue Angels 59-50.

  • During the fourth quarter, momentum turned in favor of the home team. Between 9:36 and 4:05, the Blue Angels picked up 10 points versus the Hawks 4 to come within three. A Blue Angel three pointer with 3:10 remaining in the game tied the contest up at 63-63. From there, the Hawks and Blue Angels briefly went back-and forth before being tied again at 66-66 before the Blue Angels went ahead by one with a free throw at 1:15. A layup with 16 seconds left put the Blue Angels on top 69-66. A Bucci free throw brought the Hawks within two with four seconds remaining. The final point of the contest came from the Blue Angels, who made a free throw with three seconds remaining to take a 70-67 victory over the Hawks.
