Men's Basketball Unable To Overcome Slow Start In Loss To DePauw

Greencastle, Ind. - Looking to snap a two-game losing streak, the Illinois Tech men's basketball team traveled to DePauw University on Sunday afternoon for a non-conference tilt. After hanging with the Tigers for the first seven minutes of the game, DePauw used a 27-6 run in the first half to effectively put the game away, securing a 103-79 victory. The Scarlet Hawks fell to 3-7 overall. The Tigers improved to 7-4.

The Tigers 52-24 advantage in rebounding, including 17-5 in offensive rebounds, led to 24 second-chance points against the Scarlet Hawks. The Tigers finished with five players scoring in double figures.

First Half (DePauw 59 - Illinois Tech 28)
A DePauw turnover and a Desmond Price jumper at the 13:16 mark capped off a 7-0 run for the 
Scarlet Hawks and pulled the team within three points at 16-13. Unfortunately for the Hawks that's when the Tigers proceeded to go on their 27-6 run to extend their lead to 43-19 with 5:38 remaining in the first half. The Scarlet Hawks struggled from the field in the first half, shooting 34%, including 12% from three-point range on 1-8 shooting. Conversely, the Tigers shot 53% from the field in the opening frame, including 67% from behind the arc on 6 of 9 shooting. Garrison Carter led the Hawks with eight points in the first half.

Second Half (Illinois Tech 51 - DePauw 44)
DePauw opened the second half with a 5-0 run to jump out to their biggest lead of the game at 36 points, leading 64-28 with 18:49 remaining. Although the Tigers' lead proved to be insurmountable, the Scarlet Hawks did cut into their deficit, shaving off 13 points to trail 96-73 with 2:41 remaining. Ultimately the Hawks could not get any closer, as the teams traded baskets over the final minutes of play. DeAndre Vortes paced the Hawks with 16 points in the final frame.
