Chicago, Ill. - For their final non-conference match of the 2023 season, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's soccer team welcomed the Grinnell College Pioneers to Stuart Field on Sunday, September 24th. The match, which remained scoreless until the second half, ended in a 1-1 tie after Matthew Watson scored the game tying goal with a head off a corner kick in the 76th minute. The Hawks (2-4-5), recorded their fifth tie of the season against the Pioneers (3-3-3).

With the second half underway, the Pioneers were able to capitalize on a missed clearance by the Hawks to take the lead. Samuel Gojjam gained control of the loose ball and found the back of the net in the 48th minute, putting the Pioneers on top 1-0.

In the 76th minute, the Hawks evened up the match with the game tying goal off the head of Matthew Watson. Seconds before, the Hawks earned a corner kick. Anthony Paiotti stepped up to take the kick for the Hawks, sending the ball perfectly to where Watson was waiting at the top of the 6-yard box. Watson was able to jump above his defender and head the ball into the lower right corner, straight past the Pioneer goalkeeper, making the game tied at 1-1. With time ticking away, neither side could capitalize on another opportunity, ending the game in a draw.
