Women’s Soccer Defeats Augustana College 4-1 Behind Lucy Vanveldhuisen Two Goal Performance

Chicago, Ill. - On Sunday, September 3, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's soccer team welcomed the Augustana College Vikings to Stuart Field for a non-conference game. The Hawks continued where they left off from the night before, finding the back of the net multiple times. Behind a two goal performance from sophomore Lucy Vanveldhuisen, the Hawks defeated the Vikings 4-1. After opening weekend for the 2023 season, the Hawks begin the season with a 2-0 record.

How it Happened

  • In the 35 minute, the Hawks scored the first goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead before heading into halftime. While the Vikings had the ball at half-field, they played the ball back to their center defender in an attempt to find space. The duo of Lucy Vanveldhuisen and Kenzie Tokuchi immediately attacked the space to apply pressure on the defender. In an attempt to clear the ball, the defender hit the ball off of Vanveldhuisen. Vanveldhuisen then raced towards the lose ball. With the defender on her inside, Vanveldhuisen cut the ball back, sending the defender running, and giving her space to take two touches. Deep on the left side inside the 18-yard-box Vanveldhuisen fired off a left footed shot before another defender had the chance to interfere. The shot found its way just inside the opposite side netting, right inside the goal post to put the Hawks ahead.

  • After halftime, in the 58th minute of action, the Hawks added their second goal. An initial shot by Vanveldhuisen was saved by the Vikings goalkeeper Janey Castoe. Unfortunately for Castoe, her save landed right at the feet of Amelia Moseman. Moseman gained control of the ball before taking a left footed shot. Moseman's shot would be deflected by a Viking defender, but would land at the feet of Kelly Hitchcock. Hitchcock, with her back towards the goal, was able to use her right foot to kick the ball between her legs and into the back of the net, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

  • 3 minutes later in the 61st minute, the Vikings would go on to score their lone goal of the match. After a teammate knocked the ball free from a Hawk defender, Liesl Whitener received the ball and took off into the space in front of her. Just outside the 18-yard box, Whitener sent a right footed shot into the upper left hand corner. Here the Hawks led 2-1.

  • Vanveldhuisen then scored her second goal of the game 3 minutes later in the 63rd minute. In open space outside the 18-yard box, Vanveldhuisen received a pass from Rachel Brettin. Vanveldhuisen would go on to take a touch, fake a shot and push the ball to the left of her before ripping a shot off from inside the corner of the box into the opposite upper 90 to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.

  • The final goal of the game came in the 77th minute off the foot of Moseman. After a water break due to the extreme heat, the Hawks would gain back control of the ball. A Hawk throw-in eventually led the ball to be played in the air into the 18-yard box around the penalty kick-area. Two Hawks would go on to jump in the air in an attempt to gain possession before the ball landed at the feet of Moseman. Moseman took two touches to place herself in the center of the box before taking a right-footed shot. The shot would go on to deflect off a defender and find its way into the back of the net, giving the Hawks their fourth goal of the game.
