Men’s Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Judson

Elgin, Ill. -  On the road in a non-conference match-up, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's volleyball team took on the Judson University Eagles. The Hawks (2-4) were able to take set two during the match, but in the end dropped the contest 3-1 to the Eagles (1-3).  

How It Happened

Set One - Eagles 25, Hawks 21

  • After going down 2-0 to start the set, the Hawks went on a 5-1 run to take a 5-3 lead. During the run, Jackson Van Engen and David Singer both recorded kills. The Eagles then tied the set at 5-5 before it became a back-and-forth contest between the two sides. The final tie of the set came at 14-14 after the Hawks picked up two points, one off a Singer kill, and one off an Eagles bad set. Unfortunately, the set turned in favor of the Eagles who went on a 5-1 run to create a lead. The Eagles stayed on top for the remainder of the set, winning set one 25-21. 

Set Two - Hawks 25 - Eagles 16

  • For the entirety of set two, the Hawks led the Eagles. The set started off with back-to-back kills from Van Engen. The Eagle would pick up their first point of the set before the Hawks went on a 5-1 run to take a 7-2 lead. During the run, Van Engen recorded a kill off a Elijah Johnson assist and picked up 2 blocks. Singer also picked up two blocks while Jelani Kimoto had one. A service ace by Singer put the Hawks up 10-5. A 4-1 run by the Eagles brought them within two, but the Hawks picked up three straight points to remain ahead. To close out the set, the Hawks finished with a 5-1 run. Van Engen tallied one kill while Kimoto and Johnson recorded a block. Set two went in favor of the Hawks 25-16

Set Three - Eagles 25, Hawks 21

  • Set three started off in favor of the Eagles before the Hawks picked up 5 straight points to take a 7-4 lead. During the run, Singer picked up two kills, Johnson tallied two assists, Kimoto recorded a block, and Van Engen had a service ace. The Hawks remained ahead before the contest was tied at 10-10. From there, the two sides battled as each was looking to get ahead of the other. The Hawks briefly ended back up on top with three straight points coming from a kill by Paul Henderson, a block by Henderson and an attacking error on the Eagles. At the end of the set, the Eagles were able to pull off a 9-3 run, securing set three 25-21. 

Set Four - Eagles 25, Hawks 21

  • The Hawks recorded the first point of set four off a Van Engen kill, but a 5-2 run by the Eagles put the home team on top to begin the set. The Hawks were able to go on a run of their own before the two sides entered a 7-7 tie. Both sides then picked up a point off kills before the Hawks recorded three points in a row to go ahead 11-8. Here, Riley Laite and Johnson recorded a kill. Johnson and Singer had assists. The Eagles answered with a 4-0 run to take the lead from the Hawks. With both sides taking turns holding the lead, the contest would last be tied at 15-15 before the Eagles took the lead for the remainder of the set. In the end, the Eagles won set four 25-21, taking the match 3-1.

The Hawks have a week off before returning to action on Tuesday, February 6. The Hawks will be in the Keating Sports Center as they welcome Illinois Wesleyan University for non-conference action at 7:00 PM.
