Milwaukee, Wis. – In a Thursday night match, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's volleyball team hit the road to take on the Alverno College Inferno in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) contest. In a 3-set match, the Hawks (11-10, 3-4) swept the Inferno (3-6, 0-7). After dominating the first two sets, the third set would see a closer battle. But in the end, the Hawks came out on top, taking the sets 25-11, 25-18, 25-21.
HOW IT HAPPENED

In set one, the Hawks took an early 5-1 lead with points coming from two kills from Grace Reckamp off Sasami Cavan assists, an Inferno error, a Karla Trautmann Mendez kill, and a Lilia Donaldson kill from a Reckamp assist. The Inferno went on to pick up a few points, coming within one of the Hawks at 7-6. Following the 1-point difference, the Hawks went on a 7-1 run to take a 14-7 lead. For the rest of the set, the Hawks continued to extend their lead. To close out the set, the Hawks recorded three straight points to take set one 25-11. The final points came from two Inferno errors and a kill by Donaldson from a Reckamp assist.

Set two saw two ties early on at 1-1 and 2-2 before the Hawks took the next 8 points. During the run, points were recorded by a Trautmann Mendez kill from a Cavan assist, a Trautmann Mendez kill from a Reckamp assist, a London Francis kill from a Reckamp assist, a Donaldson kill, a Reckamp service ace, a Trautmann Mendez/Donaldson block, another Francis kill from a Reckamp assist, and a Donaldson kill from a Reckamp assist. The Inferno would make a comeback, tying the set at 12-12 before the Hawks jumped back ahead. To end set two, the Hawks recorded the last three points to take the set 25-18. The final points were recorded by a Trautmann Mendez kill from a Reckamp assist, a Victoria Aspurez kill from a Reckamp assist, and a Trautmann Mendez service ace.

Set three would be the closest battle between the two sides as the set saw three ties and three lead changes. The set would be tied at 2-2. 4-4, 8-8 before the Hawks took the lead. The Inferno would come within one twice, once at 11-10, and again 19-18. In the end, the Hawks were able to get the points they needed, recording the final two to take the set 25-21. The final points came from a Francis kill off a Reckamp assist, and a Taryn Jones kill off a Toshiko Jones assist.

On Saturday, October 19th the Hawks will host their second tri-match of the season when they welcome the St. Norbert College Green Knights and the University of Chicago Maroons to the Keating Sports Center. The first match of the day will see the Hawks take on the Green Knights in NACC action at 12:00 PM. At 2:30, the Green Knights and Maroons will take the court before the Hawks and Maroons close out the night with a 5:00 PM non-conference match.
