Men’s Soccer Defeated by Late Goal from Eagles

Chicago, Ill. – With just a few games left in the 2024 regular season, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's soccer team welcomed the Benedictine University Eagles to Stuart Field for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) match-up. The Hawks and Eagles both entered the contest hoping for a win to help their hopes of making it into the NACC Men's Soccer Tournament. The contest would be a battle throughout the entirety of 90 minutes of action. The scoreboard would read 0-0 up until the 85th minute of action when, unfortunately for the Hawks, a goal went in favor of the visitors. In the end, the Eagles (6-7-2, 4-5-1) defeated the Hawks (7-6-3, 3-6-1) 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half would come and go, ending in a 0-0 draw. During the first 45 minutes of action, the Eagles out shot the Hawks 6-4.

  • During the second half, both teams would continue to take their opportunities.

  • With less than 12 minutes remaining, Tomas Rebelatto received the ball inside the Hawks defensive half, near half-field, and took off sprinting forward. With a defender crashing in on him, Rebelatto was able to find space to keep dribbling into, making his way all the way to just outside the 18-yard box before laying the ball off to Devin Zakeri. Zakeri then crossed the ball to a Paul Balea who took a touch before ripping a left footed shot. The Eagles goalkeeper made an initial save, but Zakeri would be able to bounce on the rebound and knock the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately for Zakeri and the Hawks, he was called offside, resulting in no goal.

  • In the 85th minute, the lone goal of the contest was scored by the Eagles. Receiving the ball near the 18-yard box, Kamil Bak was able to beat two Hawk defenders and slide the ball past the Hawks goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
