Women’s Volleyball Unable to Pick Up Road Victory

Milwaukee, Wis. – With just a few games remaining in the 2024 regular season, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's volleyball team was on the road Saturday, October 26th, to take on the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) match. The Hawks (12-13, 4-6) were only able to take one set as the Warriors (8-14, 3-7) took a 3-1 match victory, breaking a seven-match losing streak.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

WISCONSIN LUTHERAN COLLEGE 3 – ILLINOIS TECH 1 

(25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22) 

  • Set One 
    • Saw four ties (1-1, 2-2, 4-4, 5-5) and seven lead changes  
    • Although the set started off close with four ties, the Warriors never allowed the Hawks to take the lead. 
    • After being tied at 5-5, the Warriors went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-7 lead.  
    • The Hawks were unable to make up the deficit, dropping the first set 25-17.  
  • Set Two 
    • Saw eight ties (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 13-13, 16-16, 17-17) and six lead changes 
    • Like set one, set two saw multiple ties to begin the set, and once again after tying the set at 5-5, the Warriors took the lead over the Hawks.  
    • After going on a 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead over the Hawks, the Warriors remained ahead while the Hawks fought to stay within reach.  
    • A 6-0 run by the Hawks gave them a 16-13 lead. Points were recorded off a Lilia Donaldson kill from a Sasami Cavan assist, back-to-back Karla Trautmann Mendez kill from a Grace Reckamp assists, a Reckamp service ace, a block by Donaldson, and one more kill from Trautmann Mendez off Reckamp.  
    • The Warriors then took a one-point lead after going on a 4-0 run, but the Hawks answered with 6-0 run. During the Hawks run, London Francis recorded two kills from Reckamp, Donaldson/Ana Jones recorded a block, and Donaldson had a kill. The other two points came from Warrior attacking errors. Here the Hawks led 22-17. 
    • The Warriors would come within three at the end, but a service error awarded the Hawks set point, giving the Hawks a 25-21 set two victory. 
  • Set Three 
    • Five ties (1-1, 2-2, 9-9, 12-12, 13-13) and five lead changes. 
    • Following a 2-2 tie, the Warriors jumped ahead of the Hawks, taking a five-point, 8-3 lead.  
    • The Hawks came back with a 6-1 run with points coming from a Francis kill off a Reckamp assist, back-to-back Trautmann Mendez service aces, a Jones kill from Anna Elena Sofia Sebastio, a Jones kill from Reckamp, and a Warrior attacking error.  
    • Following the Hawks lead, the Warriors were able to come back and run with it. Starting with tying the set at 13-13, the Warriors went on an 11-3 run to take a 23-16 lead.  
    • A 5-0 run by the Hawks brought them within two, but they were unable to pick up any more points.  
    • The Warriors closed out the set with back-to-back point to win set three 25-21.   
  • Set Four 
    • Seven ties (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 8-8, 21-21, 22-22) and one lead change 
    • The first point of the set went to the Hawks with a block by Donaldson/Francis. This would be the Hawks only lead of set four.  
    • Following a 4-4 tie, the Warriors took four straight points before the Hawks answered with four straight points of their own, tying the set once again, this time at 8-8.  
    • A 5-0 run put the Warriors back ahead. 
    • As it seemed like the set was going in favor of the Warriors, the Hawks pulled out a late 9-1 run to tie the set at 21-21. During the run points by the Hawks were recorded by back-to-back Warrior errors, back-to-back Trautmann Mendez kills from Reckamp, a Francis kill from Reckamp, a Reckamp service ace, a Trautmann Mendez kill from Reckamp, a Francis kill from Reckamp, and a Warrior error.  
    • The Hawks were unable to continue their run as the Warriors closed out the set with four out of the next five points to take set four 25-22 and win the match.

The Hawks will travel on Wednesday, October 30th to take on the Rockford University Regents in NACC action. First serve in Rockford, Ill. is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
