Women’s Soccer Upsets No. 7 Carnegie Mellon University in Penalty Kick Shootout – Advance to Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament

Pittsburgh, PA. – Win and advance continues to be the name of the game for the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's soccer team who found themselves competing in the Second Round of the NCAA DIII Women's Soccer Tournament after defeating North Central College in the First Round on Saturday, November 16th. One day later, on the afternoon of Sunday, November 17th, the Hawks were slated to take on the host site school, No. 7 nationally ranked, the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans. Regulation would not be enough for the two sides as the scoreboard read 2-2 after 90 minutes of action. Under post-season tournament rules, the Hawks and Tartans entered a two, 10-minute overtime period to try to determine a winner, and again, at the ref's final whistle, the Hawks and Tartans were tied at 2-2. Because of the stalemate, the teams were sent to a penalty kick shootout to determine who would be advancing to the Sweet 16. Going back-and-forth in the shootout, matching each other's attempts, it would be the Hawks who came out on top with a 7-6 advantage.

Coming off their First-Round victory, the Hawks carb-loaded up the night before with pasta before getting a night's rest. In the morning before the game, the Hawks met, going over their game plan and drawing up their path to victory. Knowing their mission, the Hawks were ready to play.

Although the path was not what they expected, it still gave them the result they wanted at the end of the day, as they upset the nationally ranked Tartans when Amelia Moseman's penalty kick shootout attempt found the back of the net in the opposite direction of the goalies save attempt.

With the penalty kick shootout win, the Hawks improved to a 19-2-3 record

HOW IT HAPPENED

REGULATION (Illinois Tech 2 – Carnegie Mellon 2)

  • Carnegie Mellon came out quick, firing off two shots before placing their third in the back of the net in the 3rd minute of action. After an initial shot was blocked, the ball rebounded back. Audrey Bianco was able to pick off the ball and place a shot low and center, just under Sarah Thomas' dive, giving the Tartans a 1-0 lead.

  • In the 19th minute the Hawks tied the match with a goal from Kayla Smith on their first shot of the game. While dribbling the ball towards goal, Caitie Chismarich had to cut away but found an open Kayla Smith to lay the ball off to in the top left corner of the 18-yard box. Smith then took a couple touches back across the top of the box before ripping a shot over the Tartans goalkeeper Abby O'Connor hands, hitting just underneath the cross bar, allowing the ball to fall and cross the goal line. Caitie Chismarich was awarded the assist.

  • It was a battle through the rest of the first half, but neither side was able to capitalize on any more chances as they entered halftime tied 1-1.

  • With the second half underway, the intensity picked up between both sides, leading to excitement and nervousness to fill the air.

  • Both sides held possession through different stretches of the half as the Hawks and Tartans searched for a goal to take the lead.

  • In the 71st minute, the Hawks took the lead for the first time. Receiving a pass through the air, Chismarich took a controlling touch, turned, and dribbled with pace towards goal. Making a run through the center of the field was Eva Narvarte, who Chismarich sent a splitting ball to. Reaching the ball first, Narvarte touched the ball forward. It would deflect off a Tartan defender and pop into the air. Continuing her run, Narvarte met the ball as it fell through the air and struck it just before it hit the ground. The ball would roll with pace towards the far post, right past the diving Tartans goalkeeper to put the Hawks ahead 2-1. Chismarich was awarded the assist.

  • Now trailing, the Tartans picked up the offensive pressure, but the Hawks defense was able to lock down and limit their opportunities.

  • Unfortunately for the Hawks, a foul was called in the 83rd minute inside the 18-yard box, resulting in a Tartan penalty kick. Bianco stepped up to take the kick and took advantage of the opportunity by scoring and tying the game at 2-2 with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation.

  • Neither team would record a shot before the final whistle blew, resulting in a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation.

OVERTIME (Illinois Tech 2 – Carnegie Mellon 2)

With the score tied at the end of regulation, the teams entered overtime. Post season overtime rules state that the two teams would play two 10-minute overtime periods. If either team scores, the game would end (golden goal). If neither side can convert, the game would enter a penalty kick shootout.

  • With more soccer to come, the teams received a few minutes to talk and go over a game plan before the extra time started.

  • As the first 10 minutes were underway, the Hawks would take the only shots of the first overtime period. Smith put a shot left of the goal in the 94th minute. Then, in the 98th minute, Amelia Moseman forced the Tartans goalkeeper Maddie Kellogg to make a save.

  • During the second overtime period, both sides recorded a shot a piece. The Tartans took a shot first, sending the ball high over the goal in the 101st minute. Then, in the 106th minute, Smith would place a shot on goal, but Kellogg made the save on it.

  • With neither side scoring, overtime would come and go with the game remaining tied 2-2.

PENALTY KICK SHOOTOUT (Illinois Tech 7 – Carnegie Mellon 6)

With the score still tied at the end of overtime, the two teams entered a penalty kick shootout to determine who would advance to the Sweet 16.
