Men’s Basketball Defeats MSOE to Earn First NACC Win

Chicago, Ill. – In a brotherly battle, Garrison Carter and the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's basketball team welcomed Donovan Carter and the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raiders to Joe Hakes Court inside the Keating Sports Center for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) contest. The December 7th game saw a battle from start to finish between the two engineering schools. Trailing by one point at halftime, the Hawks (2-6, 1-2) jumped ahead and picked up their first conference win of the season as they defeated the Engineers (5-3, 1-2) 72-71. 

In their last year playing against each other, junior Garrison Carter of the Hawks and Graduate Student Donovan Carter of the Raiders met in their first of two meetings between the two sides for the 2024 school year. G. Carter played a huge role in the Hawks victory, recording a team high, and season high 26 points throughout the contest after going 9-of-16 from the field, 3-of-6 from three, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He tallied on four rebounds, two assists, and one steal. D. Carter was the second leading scorer for the Raiders with 14 points. He finished with six rebounds and two assists. The brothers will face off one last time on February 1st up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

First Half – Illinois Tech 33, MSOE 34 

First half action saw five tied scores and the Hawks and Raiders battled up and down the court. The Hawks largest lead of the half came on two separate occasions when the led the Raiders by three points. First was at 13:50 when a Joshua Iguade layup put the Hawks up 11-3. The Hawks then once again led by three points with 3:44 remaining after another Iguade layup made the score 26-23. The Raiders largest lead of the half came late when they hit back-to-back three pointers, one from Mason Dopirak at 1:33 and one from Donovan Carter at 1:18. In the remaining minute, the Hawks cut the Raiders lead to one point as Garrison Carter hit a layup, a free throw, and a jumper all before the halftime buzzer.  

Second Half – Illinois Tech 39, MSOE 37 

Although second half action remained a back-and-forth battle, there was only one tied score, which came at the 9:11 mark when a G. Carter 3-pointer made the score 56-56. During the second half, the Hawks led the Raiders by seven points on two separate occasions, marking the largest leads of the half and the game. The first came at 2:27 during an Owen Walsh fastbreak to make the score 70-63. After allowing the Raiders a free throw, Dario Biaggi put the Hawks back on top by seven with a free throw of his own at two minutes remaining, making the score 71-64. With just under a minute remaining, a free throw by James Pilapil made the score 72-69 in favor of the Hawks. The Raiders then went down the court and made a jumper, bringing the score within one at 72-71 with 42 seconds on the clock. Both teams would have chances in the remaining seconds, but no more baskets would be made, giving the Hawks their first conference victory of the 2024-2025 season.

  • Mason Dopirak – 25 points, 10-of-18 from the field, 3-of-4 from three, 2-of-5 from the free throw line, 8 rebounds, 2 steals 

  • Donovan Carter – 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists 

  • Anay Amoah – 9 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Illinois Tech was 26-of-53 (49.1%) from the field, 7-of-20 (35.0%) from three, and 12-of-23 (56.5%) from the free throw line 

  • MSOE was 23-of-61 (37.7%) from the field, 7-of-24 (29.2%) from three, and 18-of-25 (72.0%) from the free throw line 

  • The contest saw six ties and 21 lead changes 

  • The Raiders out rebounded the Hawks 45-27 

  • 16 of the Hawks points came from the bench  

  • The Hawks had seven blocks compared to the Raiders one 

UP NEXT 

In one week, the Hawks will return to action inside the Keating Sports Center when they welcome the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors for NACC action on Saturday, December 14th. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
