Women’s Basketball Overpowered by Wisconsin Lutheran

Chicago, Ill. - In their second to last home game of the 2023-24 season, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's basketball team welcomed the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors to the Keating Sports Center for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) contest. The contest went in favor of the visiting Warriors (17-4, 12-1), who currently sit atop of the NACC, as they defeated the Hawks (4-17, 3-10) by a final score of 81-36.

First Half (Wisconsin Lutheran 43 - Illinois Tech 21)

  • A three for the Warriors began the contest. Grace Goodnough quickly answered for the Hawks, making a layup to get on the board at 9:17. With 6:57 left in the first quarter, the Hawks came within one point of the Warriors after Julia Bucci nailed a three pointer to make the score 7-6. At 6:31, the Warriors made a layup, but Goodnough out the Hawks back within one with a jumper at 6:08. During the remainder of the quarter, the Warriors went on a 19-2 run to hold a 28-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. 

  • Camden Joko began the second quarter with a jumper for the Hawks. The Warriors immediately went down the court to make a jumper of their own, giving them a 30-12 lead. Almost a full minute would go by before the Warriors picked up another jumper on a fastbreak. With 5:11 remaining until halftime, the Warriors made a jumper in the pain to take a 36-14 lead. At the end of the quarter, the Warriors led the Hawks 41-31. 

Second Half (Wisconsin Lutheran 38 - Illinois Tech 15)

  • During the third quarter, the Warriors dominated both sides of the court as the Hawks were unable to get any action going. During the 10 minutes of action, the Warriors outscored the Hawks 24-5 to take a 67-26 lead at the end of the quarter. 

  • At 9:58, the Warriors made a layup for their first basket of the fourth quarter. Goodnough then made the Hawks first basket of the quarter at 8:47 off a jumper in the paint. After the Warriors made four points, both sides went on a scoreless streak between 7:51 and 4:25. The scoreless streak was broken by the Warriors at 4:24 with a layup to take a 75-28 lead. At 4:08, Goodnough made another layup for the Hawks. After a Warrior layup at 3:47, Abigail Marino nailed a three pointer for the Hawks off a Berit Rusing assist. At the final buzzer, the Warriors defeated the Hawks 81-36.

  • Margie Stevens - 16 points, 8-of-16 from the field, 8 rebounds

  • Sam Leisemann - Double-double, 12 points, 3-of-6 from the field, 6-of-6 from the free throw line, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block

  • Mack Hogenson - 11 points, 4-of-9 from the field, 3-of-7 from three, 4 rebounds, 3 assists

  • Haley Ott - 10 points, 3-of-6 from the field, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals 

Inside the Box Score 

  • The Hawks were 13-of-50 (26.0%) from the field, 4-of-16 (25.0%) from three, and 6-of-8 (75%) from the free throw line

  • The Warriors were 35-of-67 (52.2%) from the field, 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three, and 6-of-8 (75%) from the free throw line

  • 44 of the Warriors points came from the paint

  • The Eagles had 18 points off turnovers, 19 second chance points, and 28 points off the bench
