Baseball Defeated in Final Game of RussMatt Invitational

Davenport, Fla. - In their final game of the RussMatt Invitational, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks baseball team took on the Hope College Flying Dutch in a Wednesday night contest. Following a scoreless first inning, the Hawks (2-7) got the action going with a run in the second. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Flying Dutch (4-7) brought in one run followed by a 2-run home run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. For the rest of the game, the Flying Dutch led the Hawks, ultimately defeating them 11-4. 

Hope 11 - Illinois Tech 4

  • With two outs and runners on first and second, Jack Friar got the game going with a single to bring in Michael Lindenmuth for the Hawks first run of the game to put them ahead 1-0. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the lead wouldn't last long as in the bottom of the inning, the Flying Dutch brought in one run off a sacrifice fly, followed by a 2-run home run to take a 3-1 lead. 

  • The Hawks would come within one in the third inning. Matthew Bove led off the inning with a single. After Bove stole second, Michael Paxson singled, bringing home Bove to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Flying Dutch.

  • The score would remain 3-2 until the bottom of the fourth inning. During the inning, the Flying Dutch scored four runs to take a 7-2 lead. 

  • During the top of the fifth, the Hawks Tyler Gutsfield singled, bringing home Bove to make the score 7-3. 

  • The game remained offensively quiet until the bottom of the eighth inning. Here, the Flying Dutch recorded four more runs to extend their lead. At the end of the inning, the Flying Dutch led 11-3. 

  • In the top of the ninth, the Hawks brought in one more run when Joshua Miami scored off a Gutsfeld single. The Hawks were unable to get any more offensive action going as they fell to the Flying Dutch by a final score of 11-4.

Up Next

With the end of the RussMatt Invitational, the Hawks still have three more games in Florida. Following a two day break, the Hawks will take on the New York University Violets for three games. A double header will take place on Saturday, March 16th at IMG Academy. Game one is scheduled for 9:00 AM CT/10:00 AM ET, with game two to follow. The third and final game of the Hawks Florida trip will also be played at IMG Academy, starting at 10:00 AM on Sunday, March 17.
