Women's Tennis Closes Out Season With Loss To Wheaton College

Hanover Park, Ill. - With one final match to play for the 2023-24 season, the Illinois Tech women's tennis team found themselves one player short in their non-conference match against Wheaton College Friday night. In the end, one additional player would not have altered the final outcome, as the Thunder swept the Scarlet Hawks 9-0. The Scarlet Hawks finished the season at 4-13 overall. The Thunder improved to 12-3.

Doubles Play (Wheaton College 3 - Illinois Tech 0)
With the Scarlet Hawks one player down, the team had to shift around their doubles pairing for the match. Paige Geiger moved up from the number two pairing to join Sofia Zaballa Martinez  in the number one pairing. They dropped their match 1-8. Ashley Dame moved up to the number two pairing to join Maria Moran Miranda. In a close match, Dame and Moran Miranda fell 5-8. The Hawks could not field a third doubles team, and forfeited that match.

Singles Play (Wheaton College 6 - Illinois Tech 0)
Being short one player also impacted singles play for the Scarlet Hawks, as each player had to move up one slot in their singles assignments. In the closest match, Zaballa Martinez lost 2-6, 4-6 in her number one singles match. Dame was able to scratch out a game win in each set in her number three singles match, falling 1-6, 1-6. Geiger, Moran Miranda, and Rhea Karumuru each fell 0-6, 0-6, in their number two, four and five singles matches, respectively. The six singles match was lost by forfeit due to being short one player.

In addition, the team secured a 9-0 non-conference victory against Agnes Scott College during their spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
