De Pere, Wis. - The Illinois Tech baseball team has made a knack out of coming from behind to win baseball games this season. Saturday afternoon was no different for the Scarlet Hawks, as they came from behind late in both game one and game two to sweep their double header at St. Norbert, 7-6, and 6-5 respectively. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 15-5 in NACC play, and to 21-14 overall. The Green Knights are now 8-12 in conference and 15-20 overall.
With the double header sweep, the Scarlet Hawks moved back into a first-place tie with MSOE in the NACC standings, with the Hawks holding the tie-breaker based on the Hawks' double header sweep against the Raiders back on April 10th. The Hawks have two more conference doubleheaders remaining on the schedule, both at home next week. The top eight teams make the NACC postseason tournament.
Tyler Gutsfeld and Michael Paxson each belted their team-leading 12th home runs of the season on the afternoon, with Gutsfeld knocking in four runs and Connor Blake three. Cameron Bracewell was the game-one winner, with Joseph Belflower earning the win in game two.
Game One (Illinois Tech 7 - St. Norbert 6)
Michael Paxson got things started for the Scarlet Hawks with a sole home run in their top half of the first inning, his team-leading twelfth home run of the season. A Tyler Gutsfeld sacrifice fly in the third inning extended the Hawks lead to 2-0. A 2-RBI single and an RBI ground-out in the bottom of the third inning gave the Green Knights a 3-2 lead. A lead off solo home run by Matthew Bove in the 5th inning briefly tied the score 3-3. But St. Norbert would answer right back, plating two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies to take a 5-3 lead. The Hawks would take the lead for good in the top of the 6th inning. An RBI double by Lucas Waun, an RBI single by Jack Friar, and a 2-RBI double by Gutsfeld put the Hawks up 7-5. A solo home run by the Green Knights in the bottom of the 6th inning would complete the game scoring. Bracewell pitched 6 innings for the win, moving to 6-3 on the season. Austin Richardson earned his 2nd save of the season.
Game Two (Illinois Tech 6 - St. Norbert 5)
A sacrifice fly by St. Norbert in the second inning opened the scoring in the game. The score would remain 1-0 Green Knights until the fifth inning, when St. Norbert tacked on a pair of runs on a 2-RBI single. A one-out error by St. Norbert on a Matthew Bove ball gave the Scarlet Hawks the opening they were looking for. After Gutsfeld flied out for the second out, a Paxson walk put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Connor Blake followed with a 3-run home run to tie the score 3-3. An RBI ground-out by the Green Knights in the bottom of the 7th inning allowed them to reclaim the lead, 4-3. But a lead off home run by Gutsfeld in the top of the 8th inning, his team-lead-tying 12th home run of the season, tied the score at 4-4. With two outs and Michael Paxson and Connor Blake on third and second respectively, Timmy Old came through with a two-RBI single to put the Hawks up 6-4. The Green Knights would get one run back on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th inning, but that would conclude the Green Knights scoring. Belflower picked up the win (2-2), with Mason Kim earning the save.
