Chicago, Ill. – Back on their home turf, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's soccer team welcomed the Lawrence University Vikings to Stuart Field for a non-conference match on Wednesday night. A goal in the 3rd minute gave the Hawks (2-0-1) an early lead over the Vikings (0-3-2). After halftime, the Vikings would tie the game, but in the 70th minute, the Hawks were able to score the game winner, earning a 2-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Wasting no time, the Hawks got on the board in the 3rd minute of action with a goal coming from Devin Zakeri. In the Hawks defensive half, Pieros Siimitras sent a long, over the top pass, into the Vikings 18-yard box. Zakeri shoved his defender off before taking a touch inside the box with the ball. Towards the middle of the box, Zakeri took a left footed shot to the inside post. The Vikings goalkeeper would get a touch on the ball but wouldn't be able to control it as the ball found its way into the back of the net, putting the Hawks ahead 1-0.
-
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Hawks until the 51st minute of action when Eamon Rougvie scored the Vikings lone goal from an Emiliano Garcia Fadanalli assist. Receiving the ball just outside the 18-yard box, Rougvie took a one touch, right footed shot to the near post, sending the ball right past the diving Colin Thomas.
-
In the 70th minute, Mateo Sanchez scored the game winning goal off a Christian Garcia assist. In a give-and-go situation, Sanchez passed the ball to Garcia who then played a splitting ball through the Vikings defense into the 18-yard box. With the ball rolling towards the endline and with the Vikings goalkeeper coming out of his box, Sanchez used his speed to race towards the ball. At the last second Sanchez was able to get his right foot on the ball, sending a chipped shot into the back of the net. The Hawks held onto their lead for the remainder of the game, defeating the Vikings 2-1.
