Multi-Goal Second Half Propels MSOE over Men’s Soccer

Chicago, Ill. – On their home turf at Stuart Field, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks men's soccer team hosted the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raiders for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) match-up. Following the first 45 minutes of action, the Hawks (5-2-2, 1-2-0) and Raiders (3-2-4, 2-1) were tied 1-1. A 4-goal second half by the Raiders led to the Hawks loss as the scoreboard read 5-1 in favor of the visitors at the final whistle.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • MSOE scored the first goal of the game in the 8th minute of action. Receiving the ball center of the goal just outside the 18-yard box, Austin Killen took the initial shot, resulting in a save for Colin Thomas, unfortunately Thomas was only able to push the ball away sending it into the direction of Zach Thompson. Getting to it first, Thompson was able to get just enough of a touch on the ball to chip it into the back of the net.

  • Illinois Tech's lone goal of the game came in the 33rd minute. Athanasis Karagiannis earned the assist of the play when he sent a deep, over the top cross into the 18-yard box to Devin Zakeri. Zakeri was able to settle the ball, and with two defenders on him, create enough space to rip off a close-range, right footed shot straight past the Raiders goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1. This marks Zakeri's 8th goal of the season thus far. Following the first 45 minutes of action, the Hawks and Raiders entered halftime tied 1-1.

  • In the 58th minute, the Raiders took the lead. Earning a corner-kick, Nico Picha sent the ball directly towards the penalty kick area. Alex Lamb got to the loose ball first, sending a first touch, left footed shot into the lower near post corner.

  • 2 minutes later, the Raiders scored their third goal of the game. A Hawk turnover near half-field led to a quick Raiders offensive attack. Receiving the ball at the top of the 18-yard box with his back facing towards goal, Picha turned and sent a rocket of a left footed shot into the opposite side upper 90.

  • After earning a penalty kick, the Raiders took a 4-1 lead when Killen placed his shot to the left side of the net, opposite of Thomas' dive in the 67th minute.

  • The final goal of the match came in the 70th minute from the foot of the Raiders Ditar Useni. Taking a deep shot about 25-yards out from goal, Useni sent the ball towards the center of the net. Initially, Thomas got his hands on the ball but was unable to fully secure the ball as it barely crossed the line, resulting in the Raiders 5th goal.

  • After 90 minutes of action, the game ended with the Raiders handing the Hawks a 5-1 home loss.
