Women's Volleyball Drops Finale At Southwestern Invitational

Georgetown, Texas - Looking to rebound after dropping their first two matches of the Southwestern University Invitational on Friday, the Illinois Tech women's volleyball team ran into a buzz saw in the hosts, as the Pirates swept the Scarlet Hawks 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Texas. The Scarlet Hawks fall to 4-4 on the season.

Not all was lost for the Scarlet Hawks this weekend, however. Grace Reckamp was named to the Southwestern University Invitational All-Tournament team. Reckamp finished the three matches leading the Scarlet Hawks in kills with 18 and a 1.80 kills per set average, second in assists with 29, and third in digs with 20. It's the second weekend in a row that Reckamp has been named to an all-tournament team. The senior setter and outside hitter was also named to the all-tournament team at the Ripon College Classic last weekend.

How It Happened
  • Set 1: The Scarlet Hawks found themselves in an early hole, down 10-2 early in the opening set. The Hawks were able to put together a mini-run of 3-2 to pull within seven points, trailing 12-5. That would be as close as the Hawks would come, as the Pirates closed out set one with a 13-5 run for a 1-0 match lead. Karla Leonte led the Hawks with 2 kills in the set.
  • Set 2: After an early tie at 2-2, the Pirates used a 6-0 run to move in front 8-2. A 6-4 response by the Scarlet Hawks trimmed their deficit to four, trailing 12-8. Southwestern would regroup and complete a 12-6 run to take a 24-14 lead, to set up set point. But the Hawks would not go quietly, running off five straight points to pull within four points at 24-20, before the Pirates earned the next point to go up 2-0. London Francis, Grace Reckamp and Karla Trautmann Mendez each had 3 kills in the second set.
  • Set 3: The Pirates were just too tough to handle in the final set, opening with a 5-0 run. A 3-0 rally by the Scarlet Hawks pulled them within two points at 5-3. An 8-2 answer by Southwestern gave the Pirates a 13-5 lead midway through the set. The Hawks would use a 3-1 run to narrow their gap to six points at 14-8, but the Pirates would regain control, closing out set three with an 11-5 run to win the match, 3-0. Trautmann Mendez, Francis, and Taryn Jones had 2 kills each for the Hawks.
