Rusing's Double Double Can't Carry Women's Basketball Over Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. — Illinois Tech Women's Basketball fell to Beloit College, 62-50, at Flood Arena. Berit Rusing contributed all over the floor for the Hawks as she recorded her second career double double in the loss. Illinois Tech is now 0-3 overall. Beloit moves to 1-3 on the season.

How It Happened
The game opened with Julia Kennedy hitting a three-pointer for Beloit, assisted by Amaya Bridgewater, at 9:43. Illinois Tech responded with Grace Goodnough's jumper at 9:23, assisted by Berit Rusing, tying the score at 3. The quarter saw multiple lead changes, with Goodnough contributing significantly by scoring from both the field and the free-throw line, including a critical block and a defensive rebound. In the final moments, Rusing made two successive layups, the last one a fast-break, to put the Scarlet Hawks ahead 19-18. A turnover by Hailey Johnson of Beloit set the stage for Illinois Tech to end the quarter with a narrow lead.

The Buccaneers outscored Illinois Tech 13-6 in the second quarter, building on a narrow lead. Kaitlin Davis contributed significantly with two successful free throws at 5:05 and a defensive rebound at 4:31. The Scarlet Hawks struggled with turnovers, committing six in the quarter, including two by Rusing. Morgan Applewhite closed the quarter with a jumper at the buzzer, bringing Illinois Tech to 25 points against Beloit's 31. 

The third quarter saw Illinois Tech struggle to close the gap against Beloit, despite a strong showing from Chloe Churilla, who contributed two layups. Early in the quarter, Abigail Marino added a layup and a pair of free throws, keeping the Scarlet Hawks within reach. However, Beloit's Johnson was pivotal during the quarter, scoring multiple free throws and a late jumper, which helped extend their lead. Davis also impacted Beloit's performance with a crucial three-pointer at 3:09, maintaining their advantage. The quarter ended with Beloit leading 48-38, outscoring Illinois Tech 17-13.

Illinois Tech faced Beloit in the fourth quarter with a determined effort to close the gap, highlighted by Rusing's two free throws early on, bringing the score to 40-48. Beloit's Aina Mallorqui responded with a three-pointer at 8:33, expanding the lead. Nerea Del Olmo Perez kept the Scarlet Hawks within striking distance, sinking a three-pointer at 6:26 and adding two free throws at 5:17. Despite Illinois Tech's persistent rebounding and a late layup by Goodnough, Beloit maintained their lead, finishing the quarter strong with Brooke Foster's jumper at 1:34, securing a 62-50 victory.
