Verona, Wis. - The Illinois Tech men's lacrosse team found themselves scoreless and trailing Edgewood College 2-0 after one quarter of play Saturday afternoon at Reddan Park. But a pair of goals from
Diego Sosa and a solo tally from
Will Von Eyser in the second quarter gave the Scarlet Hawks a 3-2 halftime lead, and the Hawks outscored the Eagles 7-3 in the second half en route to a 10-5 conference victory. The Hawks improved to 2-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, and to 3-4 overall. The Eagles dropped to 0-2 in the conference, and to 1-5 overall.
Sosa finished the afternoon with a hat trick and four points on three goals and one assist.
Alexander Stokrp also had four points on the strength of four helpers. Goalkeeper
Kyle Johnson made 15 saves in the contest to earn his third win of the season.
How It Happened
- 1st Quarter - Edgewood 2 - Illinois Tech 0: The Eagles Luke Quakenbush opened the scoring in the match just 34 seconds into the contest on an unassisted tall. Quakenbush would close out the scoring in the opening quarter when he scored another unassisted goal with 34 seconds remaining, giving the Eagles a 2-0 advantage at the quarter break. The Eagles' advantage could have been larger, but Johnson saved six shots during the opening quarter to keep the Hawks within striking distance.
- 2nd Quarter - Illinois Tech 3 - Edgewood 2: Sosa and Stokrp would get to work for the Scarlet Hawks in the second quarter, with Sosa converting a feed from Stokrp at the 11:40 mark to cut the Hawks' deficit to one, trailing 2-1. Sosa strike again at the 5:30 mark when he scored a man-up goal, assisted by Von Eyser, to tie the match at 2-2. Von Eyser and Sosa would switch roles on the Hawks' third goal of the quarter, with Von Eyser scoring at 2:46, assisted by Sosa, giving the Scarlet Hawks a 3-2 lead heading into halftime. The Hawks outshot the Eagles 19-2 in the quarter.Â
- 3rd Quarter - Illinois Tech 7 - Edgewood 3: Marc Rebusi would extend the Scarlet Hawks' lead to 4-2 at the 10:53 mark with a goal on a feed from Stokrp. The Eagles would get one back, however, when Quakenbush scored his third goal of the match to pull the Eagles back within one goal at 4-3. Sosa and the Hawks would respond at 4:26 when he scored his third goal of the match, unassisted, putting the Hawks back in the lead by two goals at 5-3. About a minute and a half later, Jonathan Vitale would extend the Hawks' lead to 6-3, scoring on a pass from Stokrp. After an Eagles penalty, Yano Porter would score a man-up goal on a feed from Rebusi, giving Illinois Tech a 7-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Hawks held a 16-8 advantage in shots in the quarter.Â
- 4th Quarter - Illinois Tech 10 - Edgewood 5: After a scoreless 5:30 plus in the fourth quarter, Porter would tally his second of the match, with an assist from Jackson Brass, to give the Hawks an 8-3 lead. Rebusi would score his second of the match at the 6:40 mark, with Stokrp recording his fourth assist of the match, to extend the Hawks' lead to 9-3. The Eagles would score a pair of man-up goals over the final 4:20 of the quarter, sandwiched around a Connor Montgomery solo tally, for the final margin of victory for the Scarlet Hawks. Johnson added six more saves in the final quarter to stymie the Edgewood comeback, with the Eagles outshooting the Hawks 10-8 in the quarter.Â
