Chicago, ILL – Baseball took the short drive south to face off against the University of Chicago Maroons in a match up at Kyle J. Anderson Field on Tuesday. This is a match up that we will see once again at Rate Field, home of the White Sox, later this April. Today, the Scarlet Hawks fell 10-4 as the Maroons' offense came alive in the later innings to secure the victory. With the loss, Illinois Tech falls to 7-10 overall while maintaining their 3-1 conference record. The University of Chicago improves to 17-5 on the year.
How It Happened
Chicago opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally as a Jackson Silpock backside single plated Erik Rindner, giving the Maroons a 1-0 lead. Illinois Tech responded quickly in the top of the second.
Jack Finch reached base with a single off the Maroons' pitcher.
Jonah Wilkes delivered a clutch one-out single, driving in Finch. Wilkes also came around to score on a two-out error by the Maroons, giving Tech a 2-1 lead.
The Maroons answered in the bottom of the second when Michael Gladden drove in a pair on another backside two-out single, giving Chicago a 3-2 advantage. Gladden struck again in the fourth as he tripled in two more, stretching the Maroon lead to three runs.
Tech responded with a run in the top half of the fifth as
Michael Paxson came around to score without having to record a hit. He walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on another wild pitch.
Chicago got right back to work offensively in the sixth, however, plating three big insurance runs to make the score 8-4. The Scarlet Hawks threatened in the seventh with the bases loaded and just one out but only managed to plate a single run before the Maroons were able to escape. Chicago once again added on, this time in the eighth, scoring on two wild pitches. The Hawks were retired in the ninth, falling 10-4.
