Women’s Lacrosse Fights Short-Handed in Loss at Beloit

Beloit, Wis.—The Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks headed up to Beloit College on Wednesday night for another Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup, their final away game of the season. A second half lacking in both scoring and personnel was too much for the Hawks to overcome, ultimately falling to the Buccaneers 23-2. The Hawks move to 0-7 in the NACC while the Buccaneers are now 4-3 in conference play.

The Hawks showed their usual resiliency, starting the game with only 10 players compared to the usual 12. Despite this deficit, they kept the Buccaneer lead to only 6 goals heading into the half, thanks to a few successful clears and two unassisted goals from senior Antonia Martinez. The two goals were a bright spot in the half, happening just one minute apart from each other and shifting the momentum for the rest of the half. In that second quarter, the Hawks were 3-3 on clears, had 6 ground balls to Beloit's 7, and went 4 for 7 on draw controls.

Unfortunately, a third quarter injury to midfielder Isabelle Niebler knocked the Hawks down another player, forcing a 12-versus-9 situation for the remainder of the game. The Hawks were unable to score in the next half, instead focusing on keeping the Buccaneers locked down on defense.

Antonia Martinez led the Hawks with 2 goals for two points, 1 ground ball, 1 caused turnover and 7 draw controls.

Lucy Jorjorian pitched in 2 shots and 4 draw controls.

Izzy Niebler had 2 ground balls and 1 caused turnover before exiting the game, while Aisha Leatherwood and Aislinn McManus both snagged a ground ball a piece.

Beloit's Maya DeGeorge led all scorers with 9 goals on 12 shots. Johanna McNair followed close behind with 8 goals and 1 assist for the same 9 points.

Up Next:

The Scarlet Hawks will cozy up at home for the remainder of the season, taking on NACC competitor Lawerence University Saturday at 11 AM on Stuart Field. Saturday's game will also be a senior day celebration for the graduates of the team.
