Chicago, ILL – In a special matchup under the big lights at Rate Field—home of the Chicago White Sox—the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks took on the University of Chicago Maroons but were unable to keep pace, falling 11–3 in front of an energized crowd. The Scarlet Hawks may have come up short on the scoreboard, but the evening wasn't without fireworks—especially from Michael Paxson. In the top of the fifth inning Paxson launched a no-doubt solo home run into the left field bleachers—he 200th hit of his career.
Illinois Tech loss sees them fall to 10-21 on the year while the University of Chicago improves to 24-11.
How It Happened
The Maroons struck early, plating two runs in the top of the first on a two-RBI single by Jackson Slipock. They added two more in the second and exploded for four runs in the sixth inning, with the big blow being a three-run homer that tucked just inside the left field foul pole by Michael Gladden. Illinois Tech answered with single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth, but the deficit proved too steep to overcome.
A bright spot for the Hawks came in the third inning when Phillip Bentz drove in Luke Yachnin for Illinois Tech's first run. Michael Paxson added his milestone solo homer in the fifth, and Mason Kim notched an RBI single in the sixth, but Chicago's relentless offense kept the Scarlet Hawks at bay throughout the night.
