Milwaukee, Wis. - The Illinois Tech men's lacrosse team was looking to extend their conference undefeated streak to five games when they traveled to Milwaukee Wednesday night to take on MSOE. In a battle that went to overtime, it was the Raiders who came away with the victory, scoring 32 seconds into the first overtime period for a 9-8 victory. The Scaret Hawks suffered their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) loss and fell to 4-1 in conference play and to 5-5 overall. The Raiders improved to 3-2 in the conference and to 5-5 overall.
In a first quarter that swung wildly, the Scarlet Hawks found themselves chasing three goals early when the Raiders' Case Roberts scored a pair of goals sandwiched around a tally by teammate Luke Neal for a 3-0 lead with 8:20 remaining in the opening quarter. The Hawks mounted their comeback just under two minutes later, when
Jackson Brass scored the first of four consecutive goals by four different Hawk players to close out the first quarter, as
Yano Porter,
Marc Rebusi and
Will Von Eyser scored after Brass to give Illinois Tech a 4-3 lead.
After a high-octane first quarter offensively, the second quarter was a defensive standstill, with each team only able to muster one goal each. Coke Karst scored for MSOE at 12:15 to pull the Raiders into a 4-4 tie with the Hawks. Brass would respond for the Hawks just over four minutes later when he scored his second of the match to help the Hawks regain a one-goal lead at 5-4. The Hawks wound up putting six shots on goal in the quarter, with Raiders' goalkeeper Alex Lo making five saves.
The third quarter remained scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes until MSOE's Jack Civottolo scored an unassisted tally to tie the score at 5-5. The Scarlet Hawks'
Diego Sosa would score his only goal of the match at 4:08 to put the Hawks back out front 6-5. With just over a minute to play in the third, the Raiders' Carter Stahl scored unassisted to draw the Raiders' even at 6-6 as the teams moved into the fourth quarter.
Dawsom Smith of MSOEÂ would score on a feed from Karst 51 seconds into the fourth quarter to help MSOEÂ regain the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 7-6. Brass would score his third goal of the match at 10:52 to tie the score at 7-7. Stahl would counter with his second of the match at 8:00 to put the Raiders back on top, 8-7. The Hawks'
Connor Montgomery answered at 5:14 when he scored on a pass from
Diego Sosa to tie the match at 8-8, which is how the fourth quarter ended.
In the first overtime period, MSOE wasted no time, winning the face-off before the Raiders' Cole Karst scored 32 seconds in to give the Raiders a 9-8 sudden death overtime victory.
