Cleveland, Ohio - Although the Illinois Tech men's tennis team concluded their 2025 season on Friday, May 9th, when they fell to Haverford College 4-0 in the opening round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship, it was still another successful campaign for the Scarlet Hawks.
The Hawks won their fifth Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Men's Tennis tournament in the last six years, giving them their fifth NCAA tournament berth over that same time period. Defeating regular season champion MSOE in the process in the NACC tournament after suffering their only conference loss to the Raiders earlier in the year was an added bonus on this year's journey.
"The men had a good season," said Head Coach
Kris Powell. "We learned some lessons along the way; our doubles play wasn't our strongest, our shot selection and temperament were up and down.  But the team we have are young, talented, passionate players and I expect us to be even stronger and more mature next spring."
Despite the Fords sweeping the Scarlet Hawks, there were still some competitive battles throughout the match.
In doubles play, the number three team of
Pol Dueso Guell and
Eduardo Lopez held a 4-3 lead before doubles play was halted when Haverford clinched the number two doubles match for the lone double point. In the other doubles matches,
Alexander Feher and
Avneet Singh lost 0-6 in the number one doubles match, and
Hozumi Tada and
Pedro Caroa-Accino Roca fell 2-6Â in the number two doubles match.
In singles play, Roca won his opening set against Marko Arboleda 6-3 in the number one singles match before dropping the second set 3-6. Set three went unfinished after the Fords clinched the fourth point needed for the overall match victory. Tada won his first set against Niki Lavu 6-2 in the number four singles match, and was trailing 1-5 in the second set before play was halted. Dueso Guell lost a hard-fought battle in his number three singles match, losing set one 6-7 after a 5-7 tie-breaker defeat. He trailed 1-2 in the second set before it was abandoned. The Fords earned the match victory with wins in the number two singles match (James McKenzie defeated Feher 6-1, 6-1), the number five singles match (Jusin Minerva defeated Lopez 6-1, 6-2) and the number six singles match (Chait Krishna defeated Singh 6-1, 6-3).
The Scarlet Hawks finished the season with an overall record of 12-10, after going 5-1 in NACC play. It was their second consecutive season of double-digit victories, after going 13-10 last year. The team has a .519 winning percentage (46-43) in the four seasons Head Coach
Kris Powell has led the men's program.Â
The outlook for the future is bright for the Scarlet Hawks. After losing several players to graduation last season, the Scarlet Hawks will lose only one player to graduation this season, as graduate student
Avneet Singh completed his Scarlet Hawk career. The team will return Roca, a junior, Dueso Guell and Lopez, both sophomores, as well as freshman Feher, Tada,
Tejas Sheth and
Grant Pennock.Â
