Fond Du Lac, Wis. — llinois Tech Women's Basketball came up short this afternoon being defeated 65-47 defeat against Marian University (WI) at Sadoff Gymnasium. Despite pulling down 38 rebounds and snagging 6 steals, Illinois Tech couldn't overcome the Sabres. The Scarlet Hawks now stand at 2-15 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
How It Happened
The game kicked off with Marian taking the lead early on, thanks to a tip-in by Nyedeng Awak at 9:39. Illinois Tech's
Nerea Del Olmo Perez quickly answered with a jumper at 9:23 to tie it up. Marian pushed ahead with a 3-pointer from Taycee Schwanke at 6:03, assisted by Ava Kreger, making it 5-2. Chelsea King added another three at 5:30, stretching their lead to 8-3. Though
Chloe Churilla of Illinois Tech scored a pair of late layups, Marian ended the first quarter ahead, 16-10.
Marian extended their lead significantly in the second quarter, outscoring Illinois Tech 25-17. The Scarlet Hawks opened with a three-pointer from
Abigail Marino, assisted by
Morgan Applewhite at 9:11, but Marian countered with a three from Chelsea King at 8:56, assisted by Emily Eastham. Brianna Guelig then added five straight points for Marian, including a three at 7:45. Churilla kept Illinois Tech in the game with a layup at 6:49, but Schwanke's consecutive threes widened the gap. King nailed another three-pointer just before halftime, pushing the Sabres to a 41-27 lead.
In the third quarter, Illinois Tech outscored Marian 14-12, chipping away at the deficit. Awak got things started for Marian with a layup, assisted by Eastham, but Churilla answered back with a layup for Illinois Tech, assisted by
Grace Goodnough. King's three-pointer at 8:54 for Marian was countered by a strong performance from Applewhite, who scored 8 points and grabbed key rebounds in the quarter, including a jumper with 22 seconds left. Marino added a crucial three-pointer at 1:48, thanks to an assist from Applewhite, narrowing the gap further.
Marian came out strong in the final quarter, with King's layup at 9:24, assisted by Jon'Niyah Akins, setting the tone. Illinois Tech's
Berit Rusing responded with a layup and a free throw, bringing it to 46-55 at 7:23. Despite a defensive stop by Marino, Marian capitalized on turnovers, with Schwanke hitting a fast-break jumper at 5:28. King sealed the deal with a jumper at 3:51, securing the 65-47 win over Illinois Tech.
