Baseball Takes Second Game of Saturday's Double Header Taking 2 of 3 From UW-Stevens Point

Westfield, Ind. — Illinois Tech Baseball split a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, falling 6-1 in the first game before bouncing back with a 5-1 victory in the second match up. With the win in game two, Illinois Tech win the series and now sits at 2-1 on the season. 

How it Happened

Game 1

 Illinois Tech faced off against the Pointers, resulting in a 6-1 setback for the Scarlet Hawks. The Pointers took an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs. N. Argersing walked and advanced on an error, followed by a single from T. Soule and an RBI single by C. Olson. K. Oliver added another RBI single, and E. Snow grounded out to second, allowing Olson to score. The inning ended with the Pointers up 3-0.

In the third inning, the Pointers padded their lead. Oliver walked and reached third on an error, then Snow doubled down the right field line, bringing home two unearned runs. The Pointers were ahead 5-0 as the inning closed.

Illinois Tech managed to break through in the fourth inning. Phillip Bentz walked, advanced to third on a groundout and a stolen base, then scored on a catcher's error. The Pointers responded in the bottom of the inning when T. Ramirez doubled, stole third, and scored on an error, maintaining their command.

The remaining innings were scoreless for both teams, with Illinois Tech unable to close the gap. The final score stood at Pointers 6, Illinois Tech 1.

Tommy Jewell took the mound for Illinois Tech, pitching 4 innings and allowing 6 runs on 5 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Jewell faced 20 batters, throwing 85 pitches with 52 strikes, for a WHIP of 1.75. Austin Schnurr came in for relief, impressively holding the Pointers scoreless over 4 innings. Game 2
Illinois Tech clinched a 5-1 victory over the Pointers, with crucial plays in the fourth and seventh innings. In the fourth, Illinois Tech broke the deadlock when John Moran was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by Jack Friar. Joshua Minami, pinch running for Moran, swiped home plate, putting the Scarlet Hawks up 1-0.

The seventh inning saw Illinois Tech widen the gap with a three-run burst. Logan Inman, pinch hitting, was hit by a pitch and replaced by Tommy Jewell as a pinch runner. Jewell moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly from Quinton Riepl. Jonah Wilkes then smashed a double down the left field line, bringing Friar home. Ryan Fostiak added another run with a single, extending Illinois Tech's lead to 4-0 after seven innings.

In the eighth, Friar singled and stole second, scoring on a single by Matthew Bove, stretching the lead to 5-0. The Pointers managed to add a run in the ninth when K. Oliver doubled down the right field line, driving N. Argersing home. The game wrapped up with a final score of 5-1 in favor of the Scarlet Hawks.

Carson Weis turned in a strong performance on the mound, pitching 6 innings of shutout ball. He faced 24 batters, allowed 4 hits, and issued 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. Joe Belflower followed Weis with 2 2/3 innings, surrendering 1 earned run on 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 4. Alexander Lazes closed it out, pitching the final 1/3 of an inning, allowing 1 hit, and fanning 1.
