Men's Volleyball Wins Opener Of Swing Through New England

Boston, Mass. — In the opener of their two-game spring break road trip to the Boston area, the Illinois Tech men's volleyball team secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Emmanuel College (MA) at the Jean Yawkey Center on Wednesday night. The Scarlet Hawks showcased an impressive offense with a .435 hitting percentage, clinching the sets 28-26, 25-16, and 25-23.

How It Happened

The match kicked off with Illinois Tech gaining an early edge thanks to a series of kills by Maximo Dowling, who notched three consecutive successful attacks. Emmanuel countered with Trey Guest leading the effort, contributing multiple kills. The teams were neck and neck, exchanging points until Illinois Tech pulled ahead, aided by back-to-back service aces. Despite the Saints tying the score multiple times, Illinois Tech claimed the first set 28-26, with Paul Henderson delivering the decisive point from a Kyle Boger assist.

In the second period, Illinois Tech dominated with a 25-16 win, marked by consistent offensive execution. Jelani Kimoto started the scoring with a kill assisted by Samuel Goh, followed by multiple kills from Dowling, extending the lead to 6-2. Henderson and Tyson Haufschild added crucial points, with Haufschild's block on Guest's attack pushing the score to 15-7. Despite a few service errors from both teams, Illinois Tech remained in control, with Aaron Hanny delivering a decisive kill to reach set point. The period concluded with a service error from Emmanuel, sealing Illinois Tech's win.

The Scarlet Hawks edged out a close victory over the Saints in the third period with a score of 25-23. The set saw frequent lead changes, with Illinois Tech capitalizing on Emmanuel's errors. Boger contributed crucial points with multiple kills, while Haufschild added to the score with significant attacks. In the tense final moments, Hanny's kill from a Matthew Michler set closed the period, clinching the win for the Scarlet Hawks.
