Minneapolis, Minn. — Illinois Tech women's lacrosse, coming off their first win of the season last Saturday at Hanover College, made it back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2022 season, as the Scarlet Hawks dominated Augsburg University with a commanding 10–2 victory on Friday at Edor Nelson Field. The Scarlet Hawks' relentless defense forced 31 turnovers, while their offense soared in the final quarter, netting four goals to secure the win.
Antonia Martinez scored five goals in the match, her second five-goal game of the season.The Hawks generated a season-high 30 shots.
The Scarlet Hawks now hold a record of 2-5, while the Auggies remain winless at 0-4.
How It Happened
Illinois Tech kicked off the first quarter with a strong defensive stance and smooth ball control.
Antonia Martinez seized on a turnover caused by
Ava Roll to score the first goal at 11:08, with an assist from
Eliza Baron. The lead expanded with
Elise Wierzchon scoring at 8:20, thanks to another assist from Roll. The Auggies struggled to clear the ball and convert their offensive chances, ending the quarter trailing 2-0.
Augsburg's Breya Sawyer got on the board in the second quarter with a goal at 13:59, assisted by Isabella Kohout, tying the game at 2–2. Illinois Tech swiftly answered back as Martinez took the draw control and netted another at 6:16, reclaiming the lead at 3-2.
Jenny Park then added to the score with a goal at 4:36, making it 4-2. Despite turnovers on both sides, the Scarlet Hawks held their lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Martinez was on fire, scoring twice to widen Illinois Tech's lead. Her first came at 10:06, following a successful clear, with Roll providing the assist. She struck again at 5:14, capitalizing on a ground ball pickup by
Isabelle Niebler. Meanwhile,
Samantha Gargiulo shone in goal, making crucial saves to keep the Auggies scoreless. The quarter ended with Illinois Tech comfortably ahead, 6-2.
The Scarlet Hawks dominated the final quarter, starting with Roll's goal at 14:24. Martinez added to the advantage with a goal at 11:20, assisted by Baron, who then scored herself at 5:50.
Victoria Akirtava put the icing on the cake with a goal at 2:50, assisted by
Ellie Post, sealing a decisive 10–2 win over Augsburg.
