Baseball Falls to Edgewood in Opening NACC Doubleheader

Chicago, Ill — Baseball (5-9, 0-2) faced a tough matchup against Edgewood University (8-6, 2-0) on Saturday, ending in a 19-5 defeat after losing the first game 11-5. Despite the losses, Jack Friar and Ryan Fostiak made notable contributions throughout the doubleheader.

How it Happened 

Illinois Tech began the first game strong, taking an early lead in the first inning when Friar, who was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Philip Bentz's single and a wild pitch. Ryan Fostiak's groundout scored Friar, followed by Tyler Gutsfeld's groundout that brought Bentz home, putting Illinois Tech ahead 2-0. However, Edgewood responded, cutting the lead in the third with Carter Kelley scoring on Charlie Tompach's RBI single, narrowing it to 2-1. Illinois Tech answered back in the fourth, extending their lead to 3-1 after Gutsfeld reached on an error and scored on Christopher Degroot's groundout.

The pivotal moment came in the fifth inning as Edgewood surged ahead with five runs, highlighted by Jacob Carney's two-RBI single and Mac Vesperman's three-run homer, flipping the score to 7-3. The Scarlet Hawks added a run in the fifth when Jonah Wilkes scored on a Friar groundout, making it 7-4. In the sixth, Fostiak doubled and scored on a Matthew Bove single, trimming the deficit to 7-5. However, Edgewood secured their victory with four additional runs in the eighth and ninth, including a two-RBI double by Dominic Lee.

Final score: Edgewood University 11, Illinois Tech 5.

Game 2 How it Happened 

In the second game of the doubleheader, Illinois Tech struggled, suffering a 19-5 loss. Edgewood's offensive day began early with Mac Vesperman hitting a three-run homer in the first inning. Illinois Tech responded in the third with Jonah Wilkes bringing in Philip Bentz and Ryan Fostiak scoring on a groundout, making it 7-2 in favor of Edgewood after three innings. 

Jack Friar hit a solo home run in the fourth to make it 10-3, but Edgewood responded with three more runs, including a grand slam by Kyle Prindle in the fifth, extending their lead to 14-4. Edgewood continued their offensive display with a three-run homer by Nolan Brozyna in the sixth, pushing the score to 19-4. Illinois Tech managed one final run in the seventh when Matthew Reilly scored due to a shortstop error.

Final score: Edgewood University 19, Illinois Tech 5.
