Chicago, Ill. — Illinois Tech men's lacrosse took advantage of a rare good weather day at Stuart Field to put on an offensive explosion, scoring a season-high 17 goals in their 17-5 win over Edgewood University on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon. A second-quarter offensive outburst, highlighted by seven goals, and a stellar performance in the faceoff circle with 19 wins out of 26, powered Illinois Tech to victory.
The Scarlet Hawks have now won two in a row, and improved to 2-6 overall and 2-0 in NACC play. The Eagles fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in conference.
How It Happened
Illinois Tech hit the ground running in the first quarter with Will Von eyser opening the scoring at 13:51.
Connor Montgomery doubled the lead at 8:58, and
Diego Sosa, assisted by Montgomery, added another at 1:58. The Eagles struggled to break through Illinois Tech's defense, ending the quarter down 3-0.
The Scarlet Hawks took flight in the second quarter.
Cooper Leonard, assisted by Sosa, scored at 9:44. Von eyser added two more to his tally, one unassisted and another with help from
Andrei Gran. Von eyser also assisted Leonard's second goal of the quarter. Edgewood found some success with goals from Gavin Williams at 13:28 and Zach Thomas at 8:31, assisted by James Borgardt, plus a late effort with 4 seconds left. Despite these efforts, Illinois Tech dominated, leading 10-3 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Illinois Tech extended its lead. Sosa struck first at 11:53, assisted by
Drake Doubek. The man-up advantage paid off with
Alexander Stokrp scoring at 09:56, set up by Von eyser. Sosa added another goal at 09:11 with an assist from
Bodey Goertzen. Edgewood's Williams scored at 05:43, but Von eyser responded with a goal at 01:23, closing the quarter at 14-4 in favor of Illinois Tech.
The Scarlet Hawks sealed the deal in the final quarter, cruising to a 17-5 victory. Edgewood's Thomas scored a man-up goal at 12:56, assisted by Borgardt, but Illinois Tech answered quickly.
Canyon Kuchel found the net at 12:15, and Montgomery followed up at 5:30. Sosa finished off the scoring spree with a goal at 1:12. Defensively, Illinois Tech shone, with standout saves from
Andrew Potter and key turnovers forced by
Tyler Drexel.
