Baseball Edged Out By UChicago In Annual Southside Showdown

Chicago, Ill. — Illinois Tech Baseball took a detour from their conference schedule Monday night to take on the University of Chicago in the annual Southside Showdown game at Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox. The Scarlet Hawks narrowly fell to the Maroons, falling 9–8. The two teams accounted for all 17 runs in the first five innings, then went scoreless over the final four innings. 

The Scarlet Hawks fell to 14-17 overall, while the Maroons improved to 19-13.

How it Happened

Jack Friar scored on a throwing error in the first inning, giving the Scarlet Hawks an early 1–0 lead. The Maroons responded with two runs in the second inning, including an RBI single from Jack Sharp, to take a 2–1 lead.

In the third inning, Friar stole home, narrowing the gap to 4–2 after UChicago added two more runs on RBI singles from Ryan Bhojwani and Brady Miller.

Logan Inman doubled and scored in the fourth inning, but Chicago extended its lead to 6–3 with two runs of its own, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a groundout RBI.

Illinois Tech rallied in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. Ryan Fostiak scored on a wild pitch, and a throwing error allowed Tyler Gutsfeld and Quinton Riepl to cross the plate. Jonah Wilkes singled for an RBI, and Matthew Bove scored on Wilkes' caught stealing, making it 8–6. However, Chicago answered with three runs, highlighted by Erik Rindner's two-RBI single, retaking the lead at 9–8.

The game concluded with Illinois Tech unable to score in the final four innings, resulting in a 9–8 loss to Chicago.

John Moran started off the mound for Illinois Tech, pitching 2 innings with 2 earned runs, 2 hits, and 1 strikeout. Joseph Belflower followed in relief, recording no outs while allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit and a walk. Alexander Lazes contributed 2 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits while striking out 1. Carson Weis provided a bright spot with 1 2/3 innings, striking out 4 batters and issuing 2 walks. James Kennedy, Andrew Stanislawski, and Jackson Nutter each also made appearances, with Nutter and Stanislawski logging scoreless appearances.
