Baseball Celebrates Senior Day with Gutsfeld Walkoff Winner

Chicago, IL — Illinois Tech (19-17) secured their second walk off win of the week with a 8–7 victory over North Central College (20-17) on senior day at Ed Glancy Field. Illinois Tech's offense was bolstered by three doubles and eight stolen bases, while North Central rallied with a three-run eighth inning to tighten the score before the Scarlet Hawk offense soared to a 3 run ninth capped by senior Tyler Gutsfeld's walk off single.

How it Happened

Illinois Tech opened the game with a strong first inning, scoring four runs. Jack Friar began with a single, and Philip Bentz followed with another single. Bentz advanced on steals, and Quinton Riepl drew a walk. Tyler Gutsfeld's double drove in Bentz, and Kendall Miyasato's single brought Riepl home. Matthew Reilly added an RBI single, and Tanner Jenkins contributed with an RBI bunt single, putting the team ahead 4–0 after the first inning.

In the fourth inning, North Central's Ryan Huskey hit a two-run homer, reducing the lead to 4–2 by the end of the inning.

The Scarlet Hawks added a run in the sixth inning. Matthew Bove scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonah Wilkes, extending the lead to 5–2.

North Central responded in the seventh with two runs, highlighted by Yuhki Yamada's two-RBI single, narrowing the gap to 5–4.

In the eighth inning, North Central took the lead with three runs, including an RBI single by Jacob Hoernschemeyer, making it a 7–5 game.

Illinois Tech staged a comeback in the ninth inning. Freddy Swingle, who pinch-ran for Jonah Wilkes, scored along with Jack Friar on a two-RBI single by Bentz. Gutsfeld then doubled, driving in Bentz to secure an 8–7 victory for the Scarlet Hawks. The final score was 8–7.

Alexander Lazes started strong, allowing no hits or walks in 2 innings with 17 pitches, 12 of them strikes. Andrew Stanislawski pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out three but allowing four earned runs on three hits and three walks. John Moran faced difficulties, giving up three runs on five hits in one inning. Joseph Belflower closed with 1 inning, striking out one and hitting one batter, improving his record at 2-0.
