Lisle, Ill. — Illinois Tech (21-19) fell to Edgewood University (20-19) with a final score of 14-8 on Thursday in the NACC Tornament opener. Illinois Tech managed 10 hits and a home run, but Edgewood capitalized with 16 hits and three home runs to secure the victory.
How it Happened
In the third inning, Illinois Tech managed to get on the board when
Tanner Jenkins, after being hit by a pitch and advancing on an error, scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jack Friar. The inning ended with Illinois Tech trailing Edgewood 2-1.
Edgewood extended its lead in the fourth inning. Ben Truby scored on a sacrifice fly, and subsequent RBI singles by Hayden Hellenbrand and Jacob Carney increased the lead. By the end of the inning, Edgewood led 5-1.
In the fifth inning, Edgewood added four more runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from Gavin Wesling and another two-run shot by Kyle Prindle. Illinois Tech responded in the bottom half with
Tanner Jenkins and
Jack Friar setting the stage for
Quinton Riepl's RBI groundout and
Philip Bentz's RBI single.
Tyler Gutsfeld then hit a two-run home run, narrowing the deficit. The score was 9-5 in favor of Edgewood.
In the sixth, Edgewood scored four runs with Carter Kelley delivering a grand slam. Illinois Tech answered with two runs in their half of the inning with Riepl's two-RBI single. The score stood at 13-7.
Illinois Tech added a run in the seventh when
Kendall Miyasato drove in Gutsfeld with a single, making it 13-8.
Edgewood scored once more in the ninth inning through an RBI single by Dominic Lee. Illinois Tech concluded the game with a scoreless ninth, resulting in a final score of 14-8 in favor of Edgewood.
Scarlet Hawk Pitchers
Tommy Jewell started on the mound for Illinois Tech, pitching 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts, but allowed seven hits and five runs, including three earned, over 85 pitches.
Cullen Fulling relieved, pitching 1 2/3 innings, with one strikeout and two home runs conceded, yielding four earned runs on three hits.
Austin Schnurr faced difficulty in his brief 1/3 inning appearance, giving up three earned runs on two hits, including a home run.
John Moran provided stability from the bullpen, throwing 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts, allowing just one earned run on four hits.
