Men's Soccer Unable to Complete Comeback in NACC Conference Opener

Chicago, Ill. — Men's Soccer lost their NACC opening game to Aurora 3-2 on Wednesday at Stuart Field. The Scarlet Hawks scored both of their goals in the second half, while the Spartans finished with a 16-12 shot advantage and a 10-6 edge in shots on goal. The Scarlet Hawks are 3-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. The Spartans are 4-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play.

How It Happened

The Spartans put the Scarlet Hawks behind at 5:36, when Carlos Viayra scored off Max Crawford's assist, but Junior Pineda-Alcala forced a Brett Miller save at 9:26 and the Scarlet Hawks earned a corner 12 seconds later. Cal Graham put another attempt on frame at 13:22 before the Spartans made it 2-0 at 15:20 on Issa Mnangwa's goal from Walter Delapaz. David Rodriguez kept the score there with saves at 34:34 and 36:09, while the Scarlet Hawks added a Paul Balea shot at 35:39. The Scarlet Hawks pushed for a late response with three corner kicks between 40:01 and 40:55, but the Spartans carried the 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Spartans added to their lead early in the second half when Max Crawford scored off a Carlos Viayra assist at 47:59, but the Scarlet Hawks answered less than a minute later as Dominik Kroupa finished with his header off the free kick from Adrian Cogolludo to make it 3-1. Rodriguez kept the Scarlet Hawks within range with saves on Crawford, Issa Mnangwa and Viayra during the next stretch, while the Scarlet Hawks generated chances through Tomas Rebelatto, Cogolludo, Kroupa and Theo Balea and earned two corner kicks. Pineda-Alcala had a penalty kick saved by Brett Miller at 65:35 that kept the debit at 2 goals. Graham scored at 89:55 to pull the Scarlet Hawks within 3-2, but the clock ran out on the Scarlet Hawks as they fell 3-2.
