Illinois Tech Battles to 3-3 Draw

Munster, IN – In what proved to be a very physical match with unfavorable field conditions, the Tech women's soccer team had to settle for a draw against Purdue University Calumet.  Although they were outshot, it was very apparent that the Hawks had the better of the play as well as the most dangerous chances throughout the entire match.  The draw brings Illinois Tech to 4-8-1 on the season and they remain unbeaten in their last three matches.

The Hawks got off to a quick start in the 13th minute.  Anida Phetchenpheng, who had her way with the back line of the Peregrines all night, found herself behind the last defender off of a through ball by Kristen Barrett.  Phetchenpheng took a couple of touches to draw the goalkeeper to her and slipped a pass across the box toAdrianna Maron who was able to tuck it away for her 7th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.  The Peregrines were able to equalize about 20 minutes later as Vanessa Hernandez finished a shot into the lower corner.

Coming out of halftime, the Hawks were determined to get the go-ahead goal and again Phetchenpheng found herself slipping through Peregrine defenders.  With one final cutback just inside the left side of the 18 yard box, she curled a shot into the right upper corner to put the Hawks ahead 2-1 in the 49th minute.  Just four minutes later, Hernandez found her second goal to equalize once again.

Just 38 seconds later, the Hawks would respond with yet another go-ahead goal. Aesha Jackson sailed a shot from 30 yards over the head of goalkeeper Rachel Madsen and Tech regained the lead 3-2.  They would hold onto that lead for the next 30 minutes often threatening to get another.  However, the Peregrines caught a break when a crossed ball bounced off the outside of the post and landed right at the feet of Sandra Lozano who had no issue putting away the 8 yarder.

In overtime, the Scarlet Hawks continued to put the pressure on and almost created a dramatic finish when Maron put Veronica Torres in behind the defenders with 15 seconds remaining in the match.  Torres' shot was saved by the goalkeeper and the Peregrines were able to hold on to the 3-3 draw.

"This was a tough one to swallow, " said coach Ahmet Kose.  "The field size and conditions weren't ideal to our playing style but I thought our athletes adjusted well and fought incredibly hard and so it was disappointing not to get the full 3 points."

The Scarlet Hawks will look to continue their unbeaten streak as they host 13thranked Judson University on Saturday at 1pm.
