Lisle, Ill. - Looking to get their offense untracked heading into the final matches of the regular season, the Illinois Tech men's soccer team got the opening goal in their road match at Benedictine University Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Hawks, their first-half goal wound up being their lone goal on the evening, as the Eagles scored two second-half goals for the 2-1 come-from-behind victory. With the loss, the Scarlet Hawks fell to 3-6-1 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play (4-8-6 overall). The Eagles improved to 4-5-1 in NACC play (5-8-1 overall).
With two conference matches remaining, it is likely the Scarlet Hawks will have to win out and possibly get some help from other games to have a chance at the eighth and final spot in the NACC post-season tournament. They currently sit in 10th place in the standings.
How It Happened
- The Scarlet Hawks opened the scoring in the 39th minute. A Benedictine pass from the left sideline inside their own defensive zone was stolen by Anthony Paiotti near the left hash marks 34-yards out from goal. Paiotti pivoted to his left and cut inside against his defender. At the 15-yard line he blasted a right-footer into the left corner of the Eagles' net for a 1-0 Illinois Tech lead.
- Benedictine tallied the equalizer just under six minutes into the second half. A turnover in the Scarlet Hawks defensive zone along the left sideline was centered to the Eagles' David Szaflarski at the left hash marks, 38 yards from goal. Szaflarski took six steps to his right and blasted a 37-footer that skipped underneath Hawks' goalkeeper Adam Falcigno, tying the score at 1-1.
-  The Eagles were awarded a penalty kick on a questionable Illinois Tech foul call in the 62nd minute. Benedictine's Berto Castillo converted the kick into the left side of the net for a 2-1 Eagles' advantage.
