Women’s Soccer Nets Six in Victory Over Lakeland - Extends Undefeated Streak to 10

Plymouth, Wis. - Extending their undefeated streak to 10, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's soccer team is coming home with a 6-0 victory over the Lakeland University Muskies in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) match-up. The victory for the Hawks (11-1-1, 8-0) also marks their eighth conference win, remaining unbeaten in the NACC. Goals came early and often for the Hawks over the Muskies (5-9, 1-7) as they scored their first goal in the 3rd minute of action and their last goal in the 90th minute. The Hawks, who currently sit in fourth in the United Soccer Coaches Region VIII poll, had six different goalscorers throughout the match.

How it Happened

  • It wouldn't take long at all for the Hawks to get their first goal of the contest. Just two minutes and two seconds after the starting whistle, Gabrielle West found the back of the net. With the Muskies trying to clear the ball out of their box, they kicked the ball up the field. Unfortunately for them, West was in the open space. West took a one-touch, right-footed shot, from about 26 yards out. The ball would skip right in front of the diving goalkeeper, going right underneath her and into the back of the net, giving the Hawks the early 1-0 lead.

  • After earning a corner kick in the 12th minute, the Hawks would double their lead. Rachel Brettin would get the final touch on the ball to send it over the goal line, putting the Hawks up 2-0. After Lucy Jorjorian sent in the corner kick, Kelly Hitchcock would get a header on it, sending the ball towards a Muskie defender. After a few deflections, Caitie Chismarich would take a close range shot from inside the 6-yard box. The shot would be saved by the Muskie goalkeeper before Brettin came sliding in to make the ball cross the goal line.

  • The third goal of the game and the final goal of the first half came in the 21st minute. After a foul took place inside the penalty box, Jorjorian would step up to take the kick. Jorjorian's right-footed shot would get touched by the Muskie goalkeeper, but had just enough power on it to find its way into the lower right hand corner, giving the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

  • Goal number four came off the foot of Chismarich in the 67th minute. Chismarich received the ball off a throw-in, took a touch to turn around her defender, took one more touch into space, and then, from the 18-yard box, fired off a right-footed shot in the left near post corner.

  • Kaitlyn Walsh got in on the goal scoring action in the 77th minute. After a Hawks corner kick bounced in and out of the box, Avery Sealy was able to flick a ball over top of a Muskie defender and into the space where Walsh was awaiting. Walsh then flicked the ball over the oncoming Muskie goalkeeper, sending the ball into the empty net and giving the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

  • The final goal of the contest came during the final seconds of play. With just 12 seconds left, Abigail Dudek would score off a Rachael Fujimori corner kick, giving Fujimori the assist. Fujimori's high corner kick went straight to the top and center of the 6-yard box. Dudek was able to jump the highest to get a head on the ball, sending it into the back of the net and sealing the Hawks 6-0 victory.
