Chicago, Ill. - Just south of campus, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's soccer team took a quick trip to take on the University of Chicago Maroons in a non-conference match-up. Heading into the match, the Hawks (11-2-1) and Maroons (8-2-3) were both ranked in the latest (as of October 3rd) United Soccer Coaches Region VIII Poll. Right next to each other in the poll, the Hawks sit ahead in 4th place while the Maroons are in 5th.
The contest started in favor of the Hawks who scored the opening goal in the 5th minute of action. Right before halftime, the Maroons would tie the game in the 35 minute. Then, the Maroons would take the lead right after halftime in the 58th minute. The game would then be tied in the 60th minute as the Maroons scored an own goal for the Hawks. The two non-conference foes would then battle for the remainder of the match, fighting to get ahead of the other. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Maroons would score the game winner in the 84th minute, taking a 3-2 victory and snapping the Hawks undefeated streak.
How it Happened
-
The opening goal came in the 5th minute of action from the foot of Caitie Chismarich for the Hawks. Kelly Hitchcock assisted the play when she dribbled to the end line inside the 18-yard box and passed the ball back to the top of the 6-yard box where Chismarich was running and was able to redirect the ball into the goal with a one-touch shot.
-
In the 35th minute, the Maroons got on the board with a goal by Avery Gallucci. With the ball in their defensive half, the Hawks played it back to goalkeeper Hailey Flannagan. Gallucci immediately applied pressure on Flannagan, causing Flannagan to lose control of the ball and giving Gallucci a chance to get a touch on it to place the ball into the back of the net.
-
After halftime in the 58th minute, the Maroons went up 2-1 on the Hawks. Hannah Rittenhouse scored her first of the game after capitalizing on a deflected Maroon shot. Stella El-Fishawy had the initial shot that Flannagan saved. The save though would go directly in the air to where Rittenhouse was standing. Rittenhouse was able to lightly head the ball directly towards goal, giving the Maroons the lead.
-
Three minutes later in the 61st minute, the game would be tied 2-2 from a Maroon own goal. After a foul, the Hawks earned a free kick just inside their offensive half. Mary Frampton took the kick for the Hawks, sending a high ball inside the 18-yard box. After one bounce, a Maroon defender attempted to clear the ball out with a header. Unfortunately for the Maroons, the attempt went backwards and into the empty net.
-
With the game tied, both teams would begin to battle for possession of the ball. Between the 61st minute and the 83rd minute, both teams would record just one shot. Then, in the 84th minute, the Maroons would notch the game winner. Rittenhouse picked up the goal after receiving a through ball at the top of the 18-yard box. With the Hawks goalkeeper coming out attempting a sliding save, Rittenhouse was able to take a touch around her before sending the ball into the back of the net.
