Women’s Basketball Defeated by Houghton

Wooster, Ohio - For day two of the Nan Nichols Classic hosted by the College of Wooster, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks women's basketball team took on the Houghton University Highlanders in a non-conference contest. The Highlanders (3-0) started off the contest with a 9-0 run, establishing the early lead over the Hawks (0-2). The Hawks would come back within two of the Highlanders during the second quarter, but the early deficit proved to be too much by the end of the contest as the Hawks fell by a final score of 76-60.  

First Half (Highlanders 39 - Illinois Tech 29)

  • Wasting no time, the Highlanders jumped out to an early 9-0 run to take the lead. Kaya Jones got the Hawks on the board at 7:09 on the clock in the first quarter with a jumper. At 6:47, Julia Bucci followed with a jumper to add to the Hawks score. For the rest of the quarter, the Highlanders held onto their lead while to Hawks fought to stay within reach. The quarter ended with an Allie Sillo three pointer to make the score 23-15 in favor of the Highlanders. 

  • The Highlanders spent the beginning of the second quarter expanding their lead, but a 12-0 run by the Hawks would bring them within 2 with 3:34 remaining until halftime. During the run, Camden Joko recorded three free throws, Sillo and Berit Rusing had one free throw a piece, Jones hit a three pointer, Ana Jones had a layup, and Bucci made a jumper. Before entering halftime, the Highlanders turned the game back in their favor with a 8-0 run to lead 39-29 at halftime. 

Second Half (Highlanders 37 - Illinois Tech 31)

  • Coming out of halftime, the two sides went back and forth down the court making baskets. While the Hawks were picking up points, they were unable to close the gap between them and the Highlanders as they entered the fourth quarter trailing by 12 with the scoreboard reading 58-46. 

  • During the final quarter of competition, Bucci opened up the scoring with a layup in the paint. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they were unable to keep up with the offensive pressure from the Highlanders as they ultimately fell by a final score of 76-60.

  • The Hawks were 20-of-64 (31.3%) from the field, 6-of-21 (28.6%) from three, and 14-of-23 (60.9%) from the free throw line. 

  • The Highlanders were 26-of-57 (45.6%) from the field, 3-of-13 (23.1%) from three, and 21-of-28 (75.0%) from the free throw line.

The Hawks will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. on Thursday, November 16, to take on the Mount Mary Blue Angels in non-conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
