Chicago, Ill. - After an 0-3 start to the new season, the Illinois Tech women's tennis team put themselves in the win column Sunday morning, as they swept the Alverno Inferno 9-0 at the XS Tennis Center. The win improved the Scarlet Hawks record to 1-3 overall, and 1-1 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play. The Inferno fell to 0-3 overall (0-3 NACC).
Doubles Play
The Scarlet Hawks opened the match with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play, with the number one doubles pair of
Hannah Markiewicz and
Sofia Zaballa Martinez won their match 8-1. The number two pair of
Paige Geiger and
Pilar Torres-Dulce followed that up with an 8-4 match victory of their own. The Scarlet Hawks claimed a forfeit victory in the number three doubles match.
Singles Play
Illinois Tech swept singles play as well, 6-0. Markiewicz won 6-1, 6-1 in the number one singles position. Zaballa Martinez claimed the number two singles match 6-2, 6-1. Geiger was victorious in the number three singles match, 6-2, 6-3.
Carlotta Bernad-Canovas won singles match number four 6-0, 6-1, and Dame completed the sweep by winning the number five singles match 6-0, 6-0. The Scarlet Hawks earned a forfeit victory in the number six singles match.
Scarlet Hawks Watch
- The match represented first-time victories for several new faces on the squad. Earning their first Illinois Tech wins in singles play were Zaballa Martinez, Geiger, and Bernad-Canovas. In doubles play, Zaballa Martinez and Markiewicz earned their first doubles match victory, as did the number two pairing of Geiger and Torres-Dulce.
