Plymouth, Wis. - Attempting to extend their conference winning streak to three matches, the Illinois Tech women's tennis team lost a close match at Lakeland University 5-4 Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped the Scarlet Hawks record in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play to 2-2 (2-4 overall). Lakeland improved to 2-1 in conference and 3-1 overall.
Despite playing even in singles competition, Lakeland's 2-1 advantage in doubles play ultimately decided the match outcome.
Doubles Play (Lakeland 2 - Illinois Tech 1)
The Scarlet Hawks were able to secure the number one doubles match victory, with
Hannah Markiewicz and
Sofia Zaballa Martinez defeating Lakeland's Kassidee Webb and Olivia Heling 8-2. However, Lakeland was able to respond with match victories in the number two and three doubles matches, with
Paige Geiger and
Pilar Torres-Dulce falling 8-2 in the number two match, and
Ashley Dame and
Maria Moran Miranda losing 8-3 in the third doubles match.
Singles Play (Illinois Tech 3 - Lakeland 3)
The Scarlet Hawks were able to claim victories in the number two, five and six singles matches. Zaballa Martinez won the number two match 0-6, 7-6, 1-0 after her opponent, Mary Blossom, had to withdraw. Dame defeated Lakeland's Sadie Conway 6-3, 6-3 in the number five singles match. And Torres-Dulce won the number six singles match 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. Lakeland won the number one, three and four singles matches, defeating Markiewicz, Geiger and
Carlotta Bernad-Canovas respectively.
