Chicago, Ill. - After losing a tough conference match by one point at Lakeland on Saturday, the Illinois Tech women's tennis team rebounded with a 5-4 victory of their own Wednesday night against Concordia Chicago at the XS Tennis Center. With the victory, the Scarlet Hawks improved to 3-2 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, and 3-4 overall. The Cougars fell to 1-4 in conference and 1-9 overall.
Doubles Play (Concordia Chicago 2 - Illinois Tech 1)
Illinois Tech was able to secure the number one doubles match victory, as
Hannah Markiewicz and
Sofia Zaballa Martinez defeated Ali Wingood and Tatiana Overton of CUC 8-4. That match win ultimately gave the Scarlet Hawks the opportunity to win the overall match. In the number two doubles match,
Pilar Torres-Dulce and
Paige Geiger fell 8-4 to CUC's Kamila Giza and Amelia Engelman, while
Ashley Dame and
Maria Moran Miranda lost to Amirah Shakir and Demi Presto-Martin 8-2 in the number three doubles match.
Singles Play (Illinois Tech 4 - Concordia Chicago 2)
The Scarlet Hawks were able to secure straight-set victories in the number one, two and four singles matches, while getting a three-set victory in the number five singles match. Markiewicz took down CUC's Engelman 6-3, 6-3 in the number one singles match. Zaballa Martinez won her number two singles match 6-1, 6-4 over Wingood to extend her singles winning streak to four matches. Dame defeated CUC's Jessica Parker 6-4, 6-2 in the number four singles match. In the number five singles match, after dropping the opening set, Moran Miranda came back to win the next two sets to defeat CUC's Mackenzie Straulin 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 for the eventual fifth and deciding victory. In the number three singles match Geiger fell to Overton 1-6, 4-6, and Torres-Dulce fell to Shakir 2-6, 4-6 in the number six singles match.
