Chicago, Ill. - The Illinois Tech men's tennis team kicked off their 2024 season with a 6-3 victory over Rose-Hulman in a late Sunday night match at the XS Tennis Center. The Scarlet Hawks open their season 1-0, while the Fightin' Engineers dropped to 2-1 overall.
With the teams splitting their singles matches 3-3, the Scarlet Hawks pulling out 8-7 tie-breaker victories in each of their three doubles matches proved to be the decisive outcome for the match.
Doubles Play (Illinois Tech 3 - Rose-Hulman 0)
In very closely-contested matches, the Scarlet Hawks were able to pull out all three doubles match victories. The number one team of
Alann Torres and Avneed Singh, playing in his first collegiate match, defeated Rose-Hulman's Elijah Hadler and Ervin Perkowski 8-7, winning the tie-breaker 7-3. The number two team of
Davis Housman and
Jordan Lauer outlasted the Fightin' Engineers' Owen Reynolds and Rhian Seneviratne 8-7, winning the tie-breaker 7-4. First-year
Pol Dueso Guell, also in his first collegiate match, and
Nabil Fawaz led the Scarlet Hawks' number three doubles team to an 8-7 match victory, taking the tie-breaker 8-6 over Rose-Hulman's Grant Paradowski and Chris Lian.
Singles Play (Illinois Tech 3 - Rose-Hulman 3)
The Scarlet Hawks earned singles victories in the number one, two and six matches to maintain the three match advantage for the final margin of victory. Housman defeated Hadler 6-1, 6-2. Torres defeated Reynolds 7-6(7-4), 6-0. And
Eduardo Lopez defeated Lian 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(10-6) in Lopez's first collegiate match. The Fightin' Engineers were able to claim victories in the number three, four and five singles matches, with Paradowski downing Nawaz in a close battle, 3-6, 7-6(7-5), 1-0(11-9) in the number three match; Seneviratne downing Dueso Guell 7-5, 6-2 in the number four match; Perkowski defeated Lauer 6-2, 6-1 in the number five singles match.
