Women's Basketball Drops Maranatha Baptist For Back-To-Back Wins

Chicago, Ill. - Grace Goodnough scored 19 points, Halle Williams and Suzy Whall set career-highs in points as Scarlet Hawks, part of four players in double-figures in scoring, as the Illinois Tech women's basketball team defeated non-conference foe Maranatha Baptist University 91-35 Thursday night at the Keating Center, securing back-to-back victories for the first time on the season. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 3-5 on the season. The Sabercats fell to 0-9.

Goodnough's game-high 19 points came on 9-13 shooting from the field and 1-1 from the free-throw line. She also pulled down 6 rebounds, had 2 assists and one steal.

How It Happened

1st Half - Illinois Tech 53 - Maranatha Baptist 16: The Scarlet Hawks fell behind 1-0 at 9:33 of the first quarter after a made free-throw by the Sabercats. The Scarlet Hawks would not trail for long, however, outscoring the Sabercats 27-6 the rest of the opening quarter to take a 27-7 lead. Illinois Tech kept up the onslaught in the second quarter, outscoring Maranatha Baptist 26-9 to take a 53-16 halftime lead. Goodnough paced the Scarlet Hawks in the opening half with 12 points. The Scarlet Hawks shot 52 percent from the field on 23-44 shooting.

2nd Half - Illinois Tech 38 - Maranatha Baptist 19: The Scarlet Hawks would not keep up the same pace in the second half as they did in the first half, but  they still doubled up the Sabercats in scoring, 38-19. Goodnough and Whall each had 7 points in the second half to lead the Hawks. The Hawks shot 38 percent from the field in the second half on 15-40 shooting.

Up Next
The Scarlet Hawks will be idle until next Wednesday, December 18th, when they host Mount Mary University at 12:00pm in a matinee non-conference game at the Keating Center. The early start will accommodate area elementary school kids who will be attending the game as part of the team's Education Day.
