Chicago, Ill. - Falling behind 7-1 to Lake Forest after one quarter of play, the Illinois Tech men's lacrosse team battled back to pull within 3 goals in the second quarter, but the Foresters were able to regain control of the match in the second half en route to a 19-11 victory over the Scarlet Hawks on a very cold Wednesday evening at Stuart Field. The Scarlet Hawks fell to 2-2 on the season, while the Foresters improved to 2-0.
The Foresters used a 44-14 advantage in ground balls and a 28-5 advantage in face-offs to control possession throughout most of the match. Four Foresters tallied hat tricks in the match.
First Quarter (Lake Forest 7 Illinois Tech 1)
Lake Forest jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. Reed Tangeman got the Scarlet Hawks on the board at the 7:46 mark on a feed from Jackson Brass to cut the deficit to 4-1. But the Foresters would tack on three more goals to close out the first quarter up by six.
Second Quarter (Illinois Tech 5 - Lake Forest 3)
A Trip Gaston goal for Lake Forest at the 13:42 mark of the second quarter put the Foresters up 8-1, and the four unanswered goals seem to have Lake Forest in full command. But the Scarlet Hawks would battle back, tallying three goals in just over three minutes of play, capped off with a Brass goal at 7:15 during a man-up opportunity to cut their deficit in half at 8-4. After a Lake Forest goal at 5:41 put the Foresters in front 9-4, the Hawks would score the next two goals in less than a minute, as Tangeman(3:22) and Brass(2:31) pulled the Hawks within three goals at 9-6. But a late goal by Lake Forest with 50 seconds remaining in the quarter gave the Foresters a 10-6 advantage heading into halftime.
Third Quarter (Lake Forest 7 - Illinois Tech 1)
An Owen Huard unassisted tally at 11:36 of the third quarter once again pulled Illinois Tech within three goals at 10-7. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Hawks that would be the only goal of the third quarter, as the Foresters exploded for seven more goals to open up a ten-goal lead on the Hawks at 17-7 entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter (Illinois Tech 4 - Lake Forest 2)
The Scarlet Hawks were able to find the back of the net at a better clip in the final quarter, with Brass netting a pair of goals, Jeremy Kruse getting an unassisted tally, and Huard scoring his second of the match at 6:19. But it wasn't enough as Lake Forest scored a pair of goals in the final quarter, including the final score at 6:10 to close out the match
